hi i recently bought this piece of metal subarujusty.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=everything&action=display&thread=3601and it runs okay for me... i recently found out a problem when 4wd engaged... the gas cable should be replaced and i'm working on finding one asap, but i don't think this has to do with the cable.. when i activate 4wd (in woods or such terrain) the drive works okay for few minutes but than in low rpm (from 0-2k) when driving, the gas speeds and slows down by itself and it crazies me cos it shakes the car and me inside it... and than soon i get the check engine msg on dashboard... the oil is fine, the engine is not overheated, and the coolant is okay... although all this stuff from previous owner im gonna replace that all by myself... anyway, does anyone know what to check? thanks

** papcina**, I suspect you may have a vacuum leak in your 4wd control system. I borrowed one of your pics to illustrate some of the control components, specifically the 4wd control solenoid and the two vacuum lines going down to the trans. To isolate the leak: -let your engine warm up, and establish a steady idle. -leaving the car in neutral, engage the 4wd. -as you describe the poor idling should occur at this point. -look to the vacuum lines going down to the transmission and pinch them closed one at a time (I use a set of vise-locking pliers with electricians-tape wrapped around the jaws of the pliers to not damage the vacuum line). -you should notice a idle change as you pinch the vac-line leading to the leak (or the vacuum line itself may be damaged). At best you have a leak in a vacuum line and it is a cheap easy replacement, at worst you have a leak in the 4wd actuator at the transmission. Let us know what you find out. -RRJ

noob Q: i should pinch the line on one place only or in different places? btw, my idle in FWD runs around 1k rpm, when idle in 4WD it doesnt change noticeable...

You will want to pinch the vacuum line at either end. It sort of sounds like your engine is bucking in that rpm range. 1000rpm idle for an EFI motor is not proper, it should be around 800rpm steady. This is a pretty good indication that a good sized vacuum leak does exist somewhere. Without feeling the problem first hand it's difficult to understand what's actually happening because what you describe can be a lot of things. Go through your normal "tune up" sort of checks and make sure the simple stuff is out of the way before attacking something phantom. I only say this because it's a new car to you!
