I have been trying to put together a parts list for the junkyard to get a complete set of parts to put Gen 2 brakes on my Gen 1. I know subiejim had at least a partial thread on his swap, but I couldn't find it, and he has been too busy to participate lately.
Here's my mental list:
Axles knuckle assemblies hubs drums calipers Dust shields rotors 2 or 4 sections of custom brake lines
Do I need: Struts/shocks Master cylinder Porportioning valve Ball joints outer tie rods etc
Do the Gen 2 axles fit directly on the Gen 1 trans.?

You're overcomplicating. The 2nd gen rotors bolt to the 1st gen hubs, no need for axles or hubs to be swapped over. All you really need is calipers, brackets, rotors, dust shields, and I think you need to get some lines fabricated. If I remember the thread correctly he switched over the proportioning valve because the part number was different on his parts list, probably a good idea to grab it. -Terry

I was under the impression that the Gen 2 axles were larger than the Gen 1 and required the Gen 2 knuckle in order to bolt on a Gen 2 bracket & caliper.
Is that not true? Or is the spindle larger, but the splined end the same.
So you are saying the Gen 2 rotors, brackets, and calipers bolt on to the Gen 1 knuckle and hub.
What about the rear drums? Bolt on?

The earlier engines (1984-mid 1989) do not have the mounting boss for the axle extension. The steering knuckles for your 1993 car are only suited for the larger axles of the Gen2 cars. [Gen1 Justy actually have smaller axles, not just unequal length] The problem with this is that the Gen1 block does not have the provision for these equal-length axles (intermediate axle boss) so you either have to switch your steering knuckles out for those of a Gen1 car or else fabricate a custom adapter as described above.

Do the Gen 2 bracket and calipers bolt on to the Gen 1 knuckle?
Does the Gen 2 rear drum assembly bolt onto the Gen 1?

I found this, by omission it sounds like the Gen 1 knuckles should work with a wheel cylinder swap for the rear. Subie are those new hubs on your justy? Any idea about where I can get new Hubs for '86? saw a few places selling discs but none selling hubs. Thanks The hubs on my car are the stock originals for the 84-88 Gen 1 Justy Sadly, the small diameter Gen 1 hubs are getting hard to find. (I have a couple of pairs stashed away... Just in case!) A couple of years ago I upgraded my brake system to the bigger rotors and better calipers used on the Gen 2 (89-95) Justys with 13" wheels. I also used the master cylinder, proportioner valve and wheel cylinders on the rear from the same application. As far as I know all Gen 1s came with 12" wheels only. The swap was a direct bolt on with the exception of the flexible brake hoses. I had to have a set of steel braided flex hoses made to tie it all together. The car stops quite a bit better now under hard braking and recovers much more quickly. As to the hubs... I've never bought new ones mainly because they are real hard to come by ( It's a Subaru dealer item only) and very expensive when found... I hope you don't need one anytime soon. Take care, Jim

Pretty sure gen1 and gen2 rear brakes are the same. (Aside from the wheel cylinders) -Terry

I was interested in doing this as well, but just in the front.. Did you figure out all the parts that are needed to make the swap? Calipers, rotors, dust shields, and some brake lines made, is this all? How long do the flexible brake lines need to be? Also, may be a dumb question, but would the 12" wheels still fit?

The 12" wheels won't fit the bigger Gen2-GL brakes. Keep in mind though, there are Gen2s with the smaller brakes so it isn't synonymous.

Can anyone verify or correct my parts list to do gen 2 GL brake swap just up front?

I'm looking to do this pretty soon as well. My poor little Justy is in serious need of some TLC and the windshield just cracked yesterday. DOH!! My brakes are "adequate" for my needs but I really would like to upgrade to the larger setup.
What about the master cylinder - it's the same right? I think they changed to a new one at Gen2, but IIRC it's the same between DL and GL on the Justy.

Crap - I missed the part about the brake lines. Are they definitely different? I didn't think to look - we did the brakes on my old '91 4x4 GL a few days ago. It had the original Tokico Subaru branded brake pads on it! 68k original miles. I drove to work in my '93 this morning with a cherry picker in the back that I borrowed from a friend. Got a little scary coming down the hill into work and when I got out I noticed my brakes smelled like a welding shop. So I just ordered rotors/calipers/pads. Don't know where to get the dust shields so I will leave them off for the time being. I will compare the end fittings and if they are really different I might just get a new set of lines from Subaru and see if they work - assuming the body side is the same. Action photo!

Help needed: I am having trouble finding the brackets that go behind or inside the calipers. These brackets bolt down under the bolts holding the calipers to the spindles. I do not know what they are for, but they look like they might be there to keep the wheels from turning too tightly or as stops for the steering so to speak.
I have tried to get these from Subaru but no luck there either.. Anyone have a parts car or an idea about this one? I really want to get this done - got my brake lines and everything now!

To the obviously concerned and engaged group: I may have located these parts and may be able to proceed!
More to follow.
Yay!
