Hi all, I wanted to know if the 4WD tranny has an external transfer case bolted to the tranny's case, such as old 4x4 SUVs or if it's an internal transfer case, integrated in the transmission. The reason I'm asking is because I have a nice deal on a 1992 3 door Justy (600$ Canadian dollars) but the owner blew the 4WD system. He said he was driving in 4WD mode one winter and it got stuck in that mode, so instead of going to see a mechanic he just continued to drive it that way until something broke. He said some gears sheared some teeth or something, but the car still drives. Will it be needing a transmission? I need help quick, because I want to know what I'll be needing so I can locate the parts and know how much it'll cost to see if it's worth buying. Some pics of a 4WD tranny would be appreciated too!!! Thanks!!!

No, a boxer will not fit in a Justy.

The Justy does not have any transfer case at all (internal or external{married vs divorced}) It is a one-piece gearbox that has a pneumatic actuated output at the rear that delivers torque to a driveshaft. My friend just had his 4WD transmission rebuilt for $1000 USD.

Ok, so it's kinda like the 1991 Toyota Corolla Alltrack wagon then...So I guess that Justy will need a tranny...I'll see if I can find a used one on the cheap; there an ad I saw about a guy selling Justy parts over here so I'll start from there. I'd really like to buy that car and join the club! Wish me luck!!!

Just wondering...If a Justy would stay stuck in 4WD mode, and you where to drive it on pavement until something breaks, what do you think would give up first? The rear diff or the rear output mechanism of the transmission (just taking a stab in the dark here, I never saw a schematics of the tranny's internals)?

pocketrocket, that is a great question and although I can't be a magic-8-ball and guarantee you what would break first, my guess is that the hubs would actually give up before the diff and tranny. 4X4 Justys are known for eating hubs over time and driving on grippy surfaces with 4WD engaged is the catalyst for hub failure.
