I just learned today what that nasty vibration was in my 90 5-speed 4WD 4door: it was the front u-joint(the one coming out of the transmission) on the propeller shaft. It's a wonder it still ran. Also, the one back by the carrier bearing is a little loose. No parts available thru the usual stores. Called the dreaded dealer and Subaru just sells the "propeller shaft assembly" Cost: $359.99 There's got to be a better way and I bet you guys are just the ones to help. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks, Tom

Yeah... scared the H#$$ out of me too...
two solutions.. First find a driveshaft at a wreckers... probably 60-100 dollars, fast and easy way to fix the problem
Second (what I did) disassemble the U-joint... and take it into a reputable driveline shop.. they can then size it and find a joint to match... it still isn't cheap, cost like 80 something CND... but better then the 700 something I was quoted from the dealer. The factory joints are staked in, and require a BFH (big F&^$in' Hammer) to remove... then you need to clean up the staking with a die grinder (quick), or a file (read ....slow....) don't get to aggressive though or the new joints will be sloppy. I'm terrible at filling records, so I don't have a part number, but I do believe the joints they found were a "replacement part" for the Justy, among other things... half shafts, 4-wheelers, RC cars...

BTW... a piece of rope to hold the yoke in the tranny... keep it in 2WD... remove the entire drive shaft... and you can still drive the car while you wait for the parts to arrive!
But you didn't hear that from me!

I had a propellor shaft go bad on me, and the way I found it was when it was loose enough to start banging against the shifter linkage. Thought I had tranny problems.
