ok im new to these little cars and im heading over to look at one sunday jan 23rd. the guy i talked to said the synchros were out for 4th gear so the tranny will not go into 4th. he says 1,2,3 and R all werk fine and he drives it around town all the time. my question is how hard/exspensive would this be to fix? i hope its an easy/cheap fix cause i want one of these cars . especially a 4x4 one. thanks all for the help. -Shawn

Shawn, Sorry to say but, replacing the 3/4 synchronizer is not so easy and is definetly not cheap. The transaxle must be removed from the vehicle and dissasembled. You will need a factory service manual to do the job right and some Subaru specialty tools are needed for the tear down and rebuild. Lastly....The cost of parts is high. My advice is this..I would make some phone calls to area salvage yards before you go look at the car on Sunday. Find out if they have a 4wd manual transaxle and for how much. Once you know if you can get a transaxle at a decent price you can go on Sunday and check out the car. If you like it, use the bad trans as a way to negotiate a cheap price. Chances are the guy is selling it because he knows it is an expensive repair that he doesn't want to make. If you can't find a transaxle quickly (They are hard to come by) I would pass on the car, unless it is in showroom condition and so cheap that you just can't say no. Justys are great cars but,...New parts are very expensive and used parts are in short supply. I have 4 parts cars for this reason. Good luck, Let us know how you made out. Jim

Shawn, My bad...I thought you were looking at a 4wd car but, I just noticed that you are looking at a 87 Justy which is fwd. My advice is the same but, your search for a transaxle will be a bit easier since the car is fwd. Again..Good luck! Jim

Jim thanks for the quick reply...after talking to my mechanic yesterday he told me the book calls for 10 hours to remove/overhaul and reinstall the tranny...so thats about 500 right there...we decided that a used tranny would be the way to go....about the 4x4 deal...the guy told me its 4x4 i have not seen it yet though....i believe they made the 4x4 version in 87 did they not?.......thanks agian....i still might end up with the car....i could part it out at the very least.....

Shawn,
The 4wd version of the Justy became available in the US starting in the 1988 model year. If it is a 87 model built for the US market it is fwd only. The 87 body style is identical to the 88 (1st gen) 89-95 was different. Perhaps the car is an 88 model?
Another possibility is it may have been built for use in Canada. I do not know for sure if the Justy was available in Canada with 4wd for the 1987 model year. (Anyone know for sure?)
Anyhow, if you decide to get it...Good luck!..If you fix and drive it you will find out like I did that, These cars are a BLAST to drive! ;D
Let us know how you make out.
Jim
