I just bought it today! 87 Justy GL, and I LOVE it! In fact I just got back from a little late night 30 mi. road rally excursion. For such a small car I am highly impressed with the power and handling. I can only imagine what it'll be like after I make the mods I'm planning. The car came with a full roll cage and a set of 5 point harnesses. I'm planning on using it in rally cross & sprints. I'd like to also get in involved in road racing (asphalt door to door) but I couldn't find anything on the subject. I don't know much about these cars and I'd like to do some engine (turbo) and suspension mods. I've done a lot of web searches and haven't come up with much at all. It looks like this is the place! Any help on these subjects would be greatly appreciated. I have some mechanical experience and I'm a quick learner. So if you don't mind a few ???, I need some advice.

If you are planning on serious racing, this car as a racing platform for roadracing is very limited in it's ability or I should say availability in performance parts.Especially Brakes, and room for decent size tires!.

Congrats on the purchase of your 87 GL Justy. You MUST take some detailed pics of your full roll cage and post them on here or E-mail them to me so I can check it out and I'll post them. I have red 88 Justy GL FWD car that I gutted with the intent of putting in a full cage so I could do some racing. I am currently working on a harness bar similar to the one Sparco offers for the WRX to put in my white 88 4WD Justy GL (the one seen in my avatar) I have upgraded this car with Gen 2 front and rear anti-sway bars and a front and rear upper strut tower braces. I also upgraded to the bigger Gen 2 front brakes used on the 13" wheeled GL Justy. I even installed a set of drill/slot rotors with Axxis Metal master pads. gearheadeh is right...A serious race car the Justy will never be due to the reasons mentioned...Brembo don't do Justys!!! but, you can upgrade the lighter Gen 1 (87-88) cars using the Gen 2 stuff and build a decent car that will handle. As to tires..Seattlejusty just posted a butt load of tires that will work! It all depends on what your into!... Just go for it!!! Good luck with your car! Jim

Couldn't you just adapt performance parts from similar cars to fit the Justy?

Thanks for the help! I'm not looking to do any serious racing, just some hobby level competition. In fact the local SCCA chapter has a solo event on 9-2-07 that I'm going to attend, possibly enter.

;D Delaware is in the house!!! That Gen 1 is sheer hotness! If you don't have structural (e.g. shocktowers, subframe mounts)rust, have brakes in good shape, major mounts and connections tight - then go for it! Don't hesitate. if it is SCCA sanctioned, the techs are pretty serious, they won't let you out if there's something below par. I still remember my first autocross waaay back in the day at the 'Drop-Zone' (former FBI and SWAT training facility in Middletown, NY). I was in a HEAVY 1978 SAAB 99... had my license for a year and thought I was a real champ/bad-*ss driver. I learned more that day about vehicle (and especially my!!!) limitations on those 5 runs than the whole prior year of bad habits! Do it! More Pics!! You should be classed well in that baby... I don't have the latest SCCA handbook, but they might even give you a time adjustment (bonus) for rocking that 3 cylinder... Plus the tight cone circuit will feel like a 3 lane highway to your beasty! [!Holy crud! - I just noticed the cage in there! Who was the previous owner? 'Mall Racer', Auto-xer, Nut, or what?] Please make sure the belts are mounted properly... I can't find a good link right now (google around) or you may wind up DEAD. Have Fun,

I'll try to get some detailed pics of the cage this wknd. Also, as I stated in my 1st post I don't know much about the Justy. I'm looking for a little info. 1st and 2nd generation? I believe my 87 is considered 1st Gen. What parts will fit mine? Will the 13" wheels fit my 87? I'd also like to add anti-sway bars and the upper strut tower braces. What year Justys do I need to look for? What years were the EFI engine? Is there a turbo motor that will bolt in? Sorry about all the ?? but like I said, "I know little about this car". Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ray

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ray Fuji, 1984-1988 are Gen1. In USA They didn't sell 'em here in USA until '87 so you & I got the rare ones. BTW mine is a white Gen1 DL... good job! 1989-1994 are Gen2 and changes were made almost every year thereafter. As far as the 13" wheels go, yes if you can find actual 13" Justy wheels from a Gen2 Justy grab them!. Your wheels are 12"X4" and the bigger Justy wheels are 13"X5". Big improvement. I think everyone is pretty damn sick of hearing me talk about wheel specs by now but I will tell you that slapping on a set of 13's from anything else is pretty much a no go (except for some Nissan Pulsar/NX/early Sentra type stuff but you have to know what you're doing before trying this) you can actually modify your car and wheels to accept any 13 or 14 with the correct offset but it is involved. P.M. me for photos and instructions For sway bars do some searches on here and pay close attention to what SubieJim has done, for he's worked out what's what. Strut tower braces were never made for our cars so you'll have to fab something up Frankensteining stuff for other cars. 1991 was the introduction of the EFI Justy and although still somewhat common out West, they're rare as hell back East. Watch out for dirty fuel injectors, iffy O2 sensors and plain old-never-been-changed-fuel-filters. In fact, change the filter on your carby car 1st thing. Lastly, the great turbo Justy option: There is a widespread myth that there was a factory turbo Justy and there is frequent talk of importing one of these magical used turbo engines from Japan. Sorry, wives tale. I think that people get confused about the old Pontiac Firefly/Chevy Sprint turbo because it also had a 3-cylinder engine (albeit only 1.0 litre) and an optional 1.3 litre four-banger. The turbo 3 cranked out an impressive 80HP That's 7 more than the EFI Justy and it was only 993cc! Anyways, some basic info and trivia for ya. I'm always happy to help out, keep the record straight, or just basically correct people until they go homicidal.

its unbelievable how many people buy this weak 2wd justys. its like walking on one leg. Oh contraire, it's like whipping someones @ss with one arm tied behind your back. If you can't keep it on the road in ice & snow with two wheels and skinny rubber, you just aren't a good driver.

That car is exactly the same as my first Justy, except mine had factory racing stripes, his has a rollcage. The 2wd is a little bit quicker, will never grind a gear, better and almost amazing mpg. The 4wd wins hands down for racind around in dirt and snow. For most days of regular driving the dl is a better car.
