???I AM TRYING TO GET A 1990 JUSTY ON THE ROAD AND AM HAVING ECVT PROBLEMS. THE CAR IS A 4DR 4WD WITH ONLY 19,133 MILES. IT WAS LEFT AT OUR SHOP IN 1999 BECAUSE OF TRANS. PROBLEMS. I FINALLY GOT THE TITLE AND AM TRYING TO FIX IT. IT SEEMS TO BE LOCKED IN HIGH. I PULLED THE BRUSHES OUT AND THEY SEEMED TO BE DIRTY/OILY SO I CLEANED AND RE-INSTALLED. IT WENT FOR ABOUT 100 YARDS IN LOW THEN SWITCHED TO HIGH AND WILL NOT COME OUT AGAIN. I TRIED A NEW SET OF BRUSHES AND IT IS STILL THE SAME. REVERSE IS THE SAME WAY. MY LOCAL DEALER DOESN'T EVEN WANT TO LOOK AT IT. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?

Well, most everyone on this site will tell you that it's not worth fixing. The ECVT was a bold and daring experiment but it had major problems. I got an 89 ecvt in trade that had a good body but tranny problems. The guy said that he took it to auto transmission places but no one would touch it because whoever had tried to rebuild one had failed. I met a guy that worked at a Subaru dealership where the head mechanic had successfully rebuilt one. I took mine apart just to see what was in there and one of the main bearings had broken to peices. They were supposedly pretty neat though when they ran; faster than a 5-speed. Can anybody back that up?

I've owned both a 5 speed and an ECVT Justy. I think the ECVT Justy was indeed faster accelerating than the 5 speed! It was also more fun to drive in snow and slush.
