Hello! Long time listener, first time caller. My 1987 Justy, 72k miles, has a vibration, almost a banging, in the front under certain driving conditions. Pretty much ruled out bearings and CV joints. I noticed alot of play in the tie rods (especially left), but outer tie rods where fine, and so I assumed one or both inner tie rods were shot. Upon everything taking it apart, I see they are fine, but the steering rack itself has very significant free play up and down, especially on one that left side, and grease is squirting out. Has anyone dealt with this or have any advice? Can I just replace the bushings in the steering rack? From what I have seen they don't seem to make the whole rack anymore, and rebuilt ones are hard find and expensive.

FWIW there is a steering rack inspection and rebuild step-by-step in the shop manual

Thank you, I will try that. There do seem to be parts available to rebuild.
