hi all, my son and i just bought an 88 DL 4WD 5speed with 4WD as a project car. stay tuned for pics and progress.
car as it is now has i'm guessing 165k (too old for 65k, and in too good shape for 265k+). it sat for a year, was running rough when put away, and it runs rough now. previous owner tried plugs, wires, and a new air filter. i had suspected vacuum leaks, but couldn't find any. i'm about to spray a can of carb cleaner down in hopes that that works.
i got a back fire when revving it, and i tried to check the timing, but there's too much grime down there to see any marks. we will clean it up and try again, but that might be off too. the distributor looks funky, it doesn't look like it spins the normal way. how is the adjustment done?
we are also looking for a good manual (cheap cheap - this will not be a factory restoration, this is a "give the kid cheap wheels" kind of restoration).
the car has other issues too, but engine is #1 priority. number 2 is better braking, pedal is firm(ish) but braking action is poor. pads look new (may be glazed, only checked thickness), rotors shined up after a short test drive). have not pulled rear brakes yet. we will try replacing the fluid.
clutch pedal is floppy, and clutch judders a lot on hill starts, but no squealing, but i think it's not long for this world.
gear shift is super vague (very hard to tell which gear) each gear position overlaps with the adjacent one (in first you can flop the lever around to where 3rd, and even 5th are - 2nd and 4th too).
interior is in darn good shape, but the window cranks fall off every time you slam the doors (car has lots of um er ah... charm, yeah that's it).
needs new sneakers, and wipers (wiper high speed does not work - sprayers do though )
all for now. pics and progress soon.
