I just bought an 1989 RS (manual) last week and just got it roadworthy (new driveshaft) today. It still has a bunch of minor problems, but nothing too serious, fortunately. I'm hoping to eventually replace the rear seats with a plywood/rubber/metal floor and maybe put some 4" square light pods on (I was going to try for Miata-style pop-up driving lights, but it turns out there's an air intake in the way.), but other than that, my only plans are to get it cleaned up and running smoothly.
I keep seeing people saying they're in Portland (and a couple of you have actually helped me!); would anyone be interested in a meetup in the next month or two?

Hi, do you have any details of what's special about the RS version, we got GL and SL here in the UK. Maybe they couldn't use RS here because of Ford...

I didn't know the RS even existed until I saw this car, but as I understand it, it's a GL with fancy paint (fancy everything, actually, it seems: power steering, AC, rear wiper, two mirrors, etc.) and 4WD. It's weird to have a high-trim-level economy car.
What RS was Ford making in the '80s? I don't think copyright usually applies to trim levels, as Subaru was making the 2.5RS in the '90s.
Also, was "SL" a typo? The US had DL and GL.

Congrats that's a nice looking rare one.
I have a complete options chart for all subarus from 1989, i'd post it but there is no more attachment space in this forum. Anyway it lists only a single difference between the GL and RS, "Mirrors, Dual Remote Control" as optional on GL and standard on RS. So do you have power mirrors?!
Otherwise, my GL has two mirrors, AC, rear wiper, but no power steering. Never heard of PS for justys...Are you SURE you got power steering???

Unfortunately, it's not quite as nice as it looks in that picture; the clear coat is gone in a lot of places and the carpet has holes in it. I'm going to bedline the floor, but I can't really justify the expense of painting it. My mirrors can be manually adjusted from inside the car with a rod/lever/handle that protrudes into the cab, so it's an improvement over, say, a truck of similar era. Does yours have that?
As I understood it, the RS option meant two-tone paint and standard 4WD, but I'm not sure. I'm certain about the power steering, though. I've never heard of aftermarket power steering, so I don't know how that happened. I was under the impression that AC was a dealer option not offered by Subaru, but my service manual has a serpentine belt layout for a car with AC, and I'm not sure if that means that Justys did come with AC as a factory option.
If you don't mind, could you post that chart to an image host like Imgur and then link it here? I'm really curious to see how weird my car is.

Here it is imgur.com/a/oGmtadidn't know about this imgur thing. Yes my side mirrors have a little rod for adjustment in the cabin. And service manual also lists it.

Now I'm just more confused. Maybe mine somehow got an RS decal it didn't deserve some time in the last 28 years, which would explain the lack of power mirrors. On the other hand, it has two-tone paint, and I guess someone might have swapped the mirors for some reason. The power steering is confusing, though. Where did you get the chart?

I somewhat doubt there were any justys with motorized mirrors, the adjustment twig is still technically 'remote' from the mirror. again i just can't believe you got power steering, are you 100% certain you see a pump and reservoir in there??

I finally went and took a picture. I don't see anything myself, but it really doesn't feel like manual steering. With that said, my only experience with manual steering has been unpowered power steering, so maybe it's a bit lighter without the hydraulics causing drag. Anyway, here's a picture of the area where the guy said he saw the pump.

No power steering... Limited caster and a 1900lb car with narrow tires... No power steering needed A steering system designed to have power steering... and it not functioning - is like a hammer without the handle

That makes much more sense. I'd never driven a car without power steering before, and it felt much easier to turn than I expected, so I trusted the guy who told me he saw one.
