O.k. here goes 91 FI 3 dr 5 speed.
Driving to work - Battery light comes on. Swing car by mechanic who can't look at the car but does test the alternator output - none Order alternator - pick up and head home trying to beat the sun setting. 4 miles from home car dies (me thinks the battery is dead) Coast to parking lot under big light Go to crank battery still has life to turn over motor Scratch head sounds like no spark. Turn key and hold fuel pump line with other hand feel pressure and pump working
Try coil for spark - no spark and no smell of unburnt fuel out of tail pipe.
Test light the front little wires going into coil one has power
Test light the Ignition control module and am getting power out of the wiring harness to the module
Diagnosis - Bad Coil? I hope
Thoughts - help - any suggestions

Likely a bad igniter, the small shiny thing beside the coil.
There's a chance the low voltage caused it to heat up and pack it in.
If you have an LED test light you can see if it is that or not. An incandescent will not work.

Terry, Thank you. I did see power going to it with an LED testlight.
This is the kicker - turning over the car it spun the motor but it didn't sound right. Noodled on it for about 24 hours and it occurred to me that it sounded like the lower end was spinning but not the cam.
DAH - Timing belt is broke as I took the cover off. Unrelated but it all happed at about the same time.
After I fix the Timing belt I should know if there is a spark issue. kicking myself.

Aha, nice. Hard to get the coil to fire with no distributor rotation.
Good job.

Ah up and running. I did the timing belt and while I was down there replaced the oil pump inners and cover. The shaft was very scored, the cover and the otter gear had some scoring on the them.
I am currently running the 20W-50 and Lucas Oil Treatment. If the oil light stays off at idle, I will go back to the 20W-50 and then work my way down to lesser viscosity oils to see when the buggery light comes back on.
I don't want to replace the case but who does!
Anyway justy is back on the road and I missed not being able to drive it. My other vehicle is a 94 Soft Top Defender 90 NAS. Night and day between the two vehicles.
