Hi. I picked up a 91 Subaru Justy 2wd, manual transmission cheap because it has "mystery issues." At first glance, the only mystery was that the hub had stripped and the axle nut had been sawed off. I ordered a new hub and a axle and am waiting for them. In the mean time, I have the car on jack stands and have noticed that, when in gear, only one front axle turns - the one that was stripped. The wheel on the other side will spin freely manually, but doesn't turn forward or reverse when in gear. And, yes, the axle is engaged with the shaft from the transmission. So, am I looking at a transmission issue or is there something I'm missing? Your just a bit vague on what you are doing... it could be nothing, just the differential working. With the stripped hub, and subsequent loss of "rotational inertia" The stripped side is going to turn when the car is in running gear and up on a hoist, and the other side will likely remain stationary. This is typical of most open differentials. The stripped hub also means the car is useless on the ground, as the same thing happens, power only goes to the stripped hub side, while it spins. The same as having one wheel on ice and the other on hard pavement. Edit, just clicked on JustyRally's link This.
