Hi there I'm a new owner of a Subaru Justy I 95 4WD, I think it is the perfect car for our trip to Mongolia during this Summer (Mongol Rally) Last weekend I removed the engine and gearbox to change the clutch, both front axles went off from the wheel bearing with a few hammer strokes. Were a bit firm but nothing unusual. As I wanted to put the axles back into the wheel bearings, they were stuck. Both side the same. Is there anything I can do to do it better, with a lot of hammer strokes it didn't get better, is there some alignement procedure of the wheelbearing or heating/cooling to do, or special tools? Anyone experienced something similar? Thanks a lot for your help!! Greetings from Switzerland Raphael Our Blog for the Mongol Rally

Welcome Raphael,
The front bearing/axle clearance is tight for sure. To put the axle back in without a press... generally the preferred method is to use some washers behind the crown nut and pull it in. You may need to start with the hub off... pull a bit, then hub on... pull some more.
CAREFUL using a hammer to remove the axles... it almost always results in damaged threads at the end. At the bare minimum make sure you leave the crown nut on.

Hi,
Thanks for your fast answer, I'm glad that it is a known issue and that I didn't do something wrong. I will try it with the nut and washer this weekend, hopefully it will get in :-)
Cheers Raphael
