the belt is too tight. if it sounds like a supercharger/blower thats what it is. common problem with auto tensioners. get in there and back the tensioner off just a little and it will go away. double check the long side of the belt for proper tension and all should be well.

Couple that with my poor near sighted-ness and it becomes a chore to post. But I readily check in, look around and read post and replies to my own. Again thanks! I have to wait for the mechanic to return from out of the country (10 more days!!!) to have him check it. I hope I'm not putting too much stress on the car. I usually drive 30 miles/day back and forth to work only w/ a top speed of 65-70mph (no more than 3500RPMs). I try to stay on the streets and do 30-35mph as much as possible. The whining has stayed about the same as since it began.

youll be fine. i had this on a car for like a year before i figured out what it was.
highly unlikely but the belt could snap. belts tend to stretch with revvs. just dont rack out the engine and yo should be fine.

Cool. I was thinking of going ahead and doing the tensioner and water pump since he's gotta go back in there. I have a few things to get done on the car, but I have to prioritize the work. I have what may be a valve sticking (clicky-sputtery sound near the top of the engine). I wanted to change the valve cover gasket when he goes in to look at that. I'm a little jittery and cut off sometimes at startup (2nd start is always a go and smooths out at 900RPM), so I want to change the plugs, the wires, and possibly the distributor (cap & rotor). Those are the biggest thus far. I'm developing quite a little list.
