When I turn the wheel in my '88 4wd I hear a noise coming from the passenger side. It sounds like the steering linkage is dragging or maybe its loose. I might describe it as a grinding noise but it only happens when I turn the wheel to the right.
Can you fine folks help me with a diagnosis???

That sounds pretty typical of a bad left front wheel bearing.

There is no sustained noise when the car is turning, only when I'm physically turning the wheel. Does that still sound like a wheel bearing? And if so, can I purchase a new wheel bearing? Is that a job that I can do at home with the right tools, or does it need to be taken to a shop?

Possibly tie rod ends or steering rack issues or even steering column issues. Do you feel the vibrations or anything through the steering wheel when the grinding sound occurs?

also potential of upper strut bearing turning to oxide...
Jack it up and see what happens.

I should also mention that the car is lowered.

Does it do it when the car is not in motion? I would say either strut mounts, or a balljoint

Jack it up, take the wheels off and look for scratch/wear marks on the body and linkages. My guess is that it's tie rods or something rubbing due to the car being lowered.

Indkid87, I was thinking the same thing, but I did not fid any such markings. Is some one willing to post a picture of what an outer tie rod end in good condition should look like, I think that both of mine are out and that maybe that is the culprit. But I don't know enough to know.

I can't really see a tie rod making that noise, but I could be wrong.
As Terry asked, does it do it only when the car is moving? Also if it does it when stationary does it make noise with the front end jacked up?
I'd guess strut bearing if nothing is rubbing.
I can take some pics if I can find time, it wouldn't hurt to see pics of your car too.

It does not make the noise when the car is jacked up. And yes, it makes the noise when it's both stationary and when moving but only when I'm physically turning the wheel. The noise does not continue when in a turn.
As far as I can see the suspension for the most part is brand new, top hats and all, but that doesn't mean that the strut bearings were replaced. I'm starting to think that they are the problem. Can they be purchased alone?
I'll look into taking some pics

I'm going to bet it's the strut bearing... it's a tiny roller bearing in a plastic race. complete cheesoide. Some suppliers include a bearing with the strut top www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1130757&cc=1269132If it's a beater, a couple of big washers with a plastic washer and some grease will do the trick...

Do I need to disassemble the whole braking and steering system? Or can I compress the spring and drop every thing to gain access?

You just need to pull the strut from the knuckle. Brakes and everything can stay in place. Undo pinch bolt (lots of penetrating oil ahead of time if rusty!) The brake hose runs through two tabs on the strut, if rusty, cut and bend the tabs so you don't have to open the brake hose nuts and cause problems there.
You will need a spring compressor to take the strut apart to access the bearing under the strut top.

this grinding noise could be a screw, your wheel hub should have the correct measures, otherwise it will "dance" and no one wants that,
