Hey guys, I'm getting ready to replace my lower ball joints up front. I went to the junkyard the other day and figured out how to remove them, but will I need a press to put the new ones in? I should have tried putting them back in on the junkers but didn't. I can borrow a press from the auto parts store, but don't want to do that if I can manage without it. Thanks!

Nope,
The only thing to watch is not breaking the pinch bolt that holds the joint in the spindle/hub carrier. If it all rusty I would be prepping a few days ahead with some PB blaster on that bolt. If it breaks, you pretty much need to pull the hub carrier off to drill and remove it.

Good tip madmatt, thanks. My problem was that the cotter pin and nut had come off the underside of the ball joint and I thought it had stripped the threads, but the threads looked fine and I was able to just put a new castle nut and cotter pin on. Now I'll just wait until I do the CV boots to replace the ball joints, which aren't that bad anyway. I'll definitely take your advice on prepping that pinch bolt when I get to it. Thanks again!

I replaced mine last August on the drive. Took me about an hour and a half for one side as I was doing bottom ball joint, track rod and top mount. The other side however, as mentioned the pinch bolt snapped so I removed the hub and drilled it out at work. To get the ball joints in I just used a rubber mallet and a bit of grease to help them in.
