I am looking at buying a justy and the current owner states the engine is good but he just trashed his 2nd tranny. He just found out the suspected cause of both tranny's going bad is that he has different size tires on at least two of the wheels and that they cause the tranny to go out. He says it happens very quickly and that suburu's 4wd system is very touchy in terms of tire sizes. Can anyone here confirm this? thanks in advance for any info.

yes, it gets angry when they are different front/back. driving with the 4wd on all the time isn't good either.

It doesn't make a difference to the transmission if the tires are different front to rear and it's in 2wd. However if the front are mismatched or he was in 4wd all the time that would make sense. Remember the Justy transmission expects that all 4 wheels will rotate at the same speed while in 4wd and different size tires turn at different speeds. (Due to their circumfrence).

Armageddous and Redfathom thanks very much. the owner did mention he couldn'dt get it out of 4wd and the diff size tires probably then caused it to fail. maybe i'll buy it for the body, motor, find another tranny, and set of same size tires!

Is that the only issue with the trans? It could just be the 4wd solenoids, they are known to fail.
