Hi,
I plan on attempting to refill the struts on my 1988 Justy gl, with 15wt motorcycle fork oil, as described in the justy shocks r&r sticky. My question is: 1. should I drain the old oil from the shocks before refilling; and 2. How much oil should I add?

Hey Austing,
For sure drain the old oil! measure what come out and replace. I'm pretty sure it was around 250 ml but read my posts in the sticky. 15 wt is probably a bit heavier then the stock oil which I woukd think is a 10 wt. but rhen again mjne was pretty full of emulsified water...

I think I'll go with the 15wt, as I would like the suspension to be a bit stiffer. I plan to go the route that you outlined: Drill and tap hole into strut, refill, screw bolt with rubber O-ring into tapped hole.
Any other recommendations?

And as for the 15 wt, I think that's a fine plan.
My only remark is that you may find getting a standard O ring to seal difficult with the curve of the strut body. Get something fairly thick, or tap using NPT thread and use a pipe plug. Then you will be sealing the threads rather then the bolt cap.

Okay great,
I've read over your thread, and just to clarify and make sure that I know what I'm supposed to be doing: The strut piston should be fully pressed down into the body of the strut (compressing the strut to its shortest possible length), and then the fresh oil should be added?

Yep, exactly.
You can drain it with the piston extended, then depress it all the way to blow out the oil. Then add your new oil cap it, and cycle it a few times.
