just picked up this '92 ECVT 4x4 5door. I am new to Subarus in general, but they are the Cadillac of the Kootenays according to many. So I ended up paying more then I wanted to, 700$ with small oil leak and a messed up injector ( i believe ). The HG was recently replaced as well as other things. 220 000 KM (137000 Miles). I am scared to death by all the crap I've been reading about these transmissions. I have minimal mechanical knowledge. Am I getting into something i don't want to deal with? Should I be scared about the transmission just blowing up on me? Also wondering if anyone has a ballpark estimate of the costs (with labour at 75/hr) for a tranny swap and conversion to standard? Just wondering what it has cost others. Cheers. Attachments:

Congrats on your purchase I think you did alright for $700 honestly. It is getting harder and harder to find even semi clean Justys for low money anymore.

Personally I've always wanted a hatchback, and a red one at that, also the 4x4 is amazing up in the snowy mountains. I realize I am not a mechanic so I have the car in at a mechanic that I know personally and who does works for my other family members. They are not going to do any work until they tell me the cost to get her running sexy and smoothe I'm pretty willing to put 1000 bucks into her including some new winters, and call it a sweet car for even 1700. Even tho its a silly CVT...But I figure if they think it will cost something ridiculous I can always turn it into my Justy Mud Bogger over the next few years.

Congrats on your purchase, again seems to be a fair market value these days, price seems to be going up now! As you say , pay the mechanic to tune it up with new injectors and some really good WINTER tires and you are Golden. I used to be one of the I absolutley Loved the ECVT guys, till I had a few fail, If it was my first one and not having the option of a standard I would still buy one. What I have found with driving the ecvt in DEEP wet snow like what you guys just got unloaded on your doorstep is: They lack low right off idle torque. so what happens is, if you are driving into an area that has unknown and potentiall deep snow, were are talking up to the headlights snow! you will plod along and slow down to the point where it will bog down and stop moving, With a Std trans car you would just relaunch the car by revving and dropping the clutch (only in snow!) What I had to do near my house when stuck showing off in a field (with people watching while shoveling there sidewalks, thinking.. ... if he asks for a phone for a tow truck Iam gonna tell him off!) was dig the extra snow out between the tracks of where I was to be able to get movement back 5 feet, then dig between the tracks of where I was first stuck. this got me through that first 5 feet and only a couple more feet. but when I reversed the 7 feet and then ran forward the 7 or 8 feet I now had enough momentum to get enough speed to start planing above the snow again. Justy's fly over the snow just like a boat sort of fly's over the water. I can still see the look on buddies face when I drove out, not needing a tow. Bet he was wondering what that strange little car was eh? The ecvt does not like to work real hard like being stuck in wet snow. this will cause it to over heat and you will get your over heated warning bell and idiot light. If you see this just as you are now out of trouble, I would baby it or just let it cool off and catch it's breath so to speak. If you are still stuck and continue you will be causing damage. As far as changing it to a STD trans, Well you central B.C. guys have the last place for rust free justy's in Canada. My 95 was from there and it was nice. So if you bought a real poor , sad rust bucket from Alberta and took on the massive conversion yourself, .. .. well ! ! Look at it this way, Just because your Granddad died of a heart attack doesn't mean that you should book yourself into the hospital to get a pacemaker installed ! If the ecvt is working, odds are it .. ... ... might continue to keep working. Don't fix what aint broke!

That story made me laugh a few times. The first day I got the Justy it was white-out snowing and iced up pretty good. And of course buddy advertised the vehicle with winters on. I get there and they are balder then Bruce Willice. Its literally buried past the bottoms of the doors, I was quite impressed as i just jumped in and easily crawled out. The rpms were going all crazy once i stopped, up to 3000, then drop, etc. So i get a call today from the mechanic, and apparently it needed some gasket or something for the exhaust manifold, and buddy had removed some sensors and what not. What really gets me is the fact that he was so sure it was a fuel injector... oh well... Only 5 hours for the mechanic to fix a 20 dollar part haha. In the end im probably just going to go with all seasons, because the winters they had for me are too big for my little justy, I live in town, and the car is a beast in 4wheel, she'll be fine!
