My Justy heater sucked last winter, so I'm replacing everything coolant related that I can think of...
I got the new thermostat and noticed it was smaller than the old one. The diameter is the same but it's not nearly as deep and the spring is smaller.. but I put it in anyway and the car overheated pretty quick. the hose on the top of the thermostat housing was hot but the one on the bottom was cold so obviously it's not working...
I installed it spring side up towards the hood, pretty sure that's correct.
I'm about to boil them both in water to see what's going on.. i might just put the old one back in..
...for cryin out loud...

ARG! reinstalled new thermostat and just like before, it overheated.
I kept the rad cap off and filled the rad slowly, topping it up every so often and then out of nowhere it shot coolant out like 4 feet into the air... what the heck.,.
And again, I felt the coolant hoses and the top one was nice and warm but the bottom one was cold..

Let the thermostat out and find out what happens. Is your waterpump working properly?

Good question.. just swapped the old thermostat back in and ran the car. I jacked up the front and bled the system as best I could. It reached operating temp finally and then kept going, but this time I couldn't feel any of the hoses getting hot.. and finally it belched out a ton of hot coolant and steam from the rad... I shut it off and felt the hoses and they had started to warm up but the engine was boiling.. I don't think any coolant is being moved around ARG... i'm gonna look into the water pump now...

Wait a minute.. is it even possible for the water pump to fail completely? and not be able to push any water through the system at all?!

NICE!... thanks hollandjusty.. those pictures are worth a thousand words..
Definitely, definitely gonna rebuild my water pump.. might do the headgasket too, while i'm at it.
I'd love to rebuild the whole thing but I gotta draw the line somewhere. I was supposed to have started my Jetta GTI rebuild already...

UPDATES!!.. SO!... I got it running again and can keep it running without overheating..
I borrowed buddy's engine hoist thinking I was gonna yank out the engine and out on a whole new front engine cover, complete with new water pump and oil pump.. and dreading the fact that once I open the engine up, I'm gonna wanna replace pretty much everything.. and then i'd just want a whole new Justy cause this thing is so rusty. lol
After I inspected the water pump, I realized that A) it hadn't been leaking previous and B) the impeller was not seized and un-corroded. So I put a new gasket on it and put it back on. As with every water pump I've ever worked on, ONE MEASLY bolt broke .. I'll deal with it.
The I took the thermostat out entirely.
I blew compressed air through the heater core from both ends, and shot air through the block till I could feel it coming out the other end. Ghetto I know.
When I filled the coolant back up, I filled the block by itself, then I filled the hoses with a funnel and finally filled the rad..
It may well need a headgasket but it`s such a POS that as long as it runs, i`m happy until I find a new Justy to buy,
Thanks for all the efforts!!

(Standing in front of the car, looking into the engine bay.) If carb'ed, your thermostat is located on the intake manifold, from the carb slightly toward the battery tray. Follow the big, top coolant hose from the radiator if you're uncertain. If EFI, your thermostat is located in a small box-looking thingy on the coolant pipe on the engine block. Good luck. And don't forget to change/seal the gasket.

blacklight, i am pretty sure its the EFI. its a 93 fwd. i'm about to dig into it and try to swap it out. while i smoking this morning i noticed that i was missing 2 lugnuts on the same tire, wonderful. can't afford new ones so i took one off the rear and have 3 on 2 tires for the time being. hopefully it'll hold out until friday. i didn't realize though that i would need to replace the gasket. is that a must?
just looked at the replacement thermostat and it has a gasket on it already so i believe i am all set...i hope

Then it's an EFI.
Get new nuts for the wheels! And torque em!
Replacing the gasket is highly recommended, cheap and will probably save you a lot of trouble if the old one doesn't hold.

took everything apart with the help of my gearhead neighbor and there are no seals between any of the connections. got it all put together and filled up and it was leaking pretty bad so we took it back apart and are going to make some gaskets. hopefully that'll stop the drips. thanks for the help. i'll update on how it went

alright, so after almost 4 hours i think its fixed. ended up using the old gasket on the new thermostat because the one that came with was smaller and probably the cause of the leaks. had to wrestle it into the little recessed space and viola, no more leaks. now i'm just starting it up and letting it heat up to running temp and bleeding out all the air bubbles. it was a freaking chore but it's all better now. i'm glad i found this post and got the wise words. thanks and good luck future strugglers!

Glad you fixed it. I hate to admit this but I was having the same problem after redoing the water pump and a new thermostat. Same thing, the new thermostat didn't look like the old one, but it turned out I had put the new one in backwards. Luckily I figured it out before I tore into the water pump. Initially I thought the water pump was seized.

Hi, i have an issue with my carbed justy from 1992... it keeps boiling the water... i tested the thermostat, it is ok and opening when boiled... the fan itself is turning ok when connected to 12V directly... the fuse is ok.... not sure if it is the fan connection somewhere wrong or the water pump, because when its boiling the fan doesnt turn around... can someone troubleshoot me?
edit: if the fan on the radiator is not turning on when it is boiling, what should i look at to replace?
