Bought this thing a few years back off my friend for a couple hundred bucks. I absolutely love this little guy!.. I hit a deer with it last winter and got a new hood, headlights and grille from MotorHomeMike (thanks!) and got it back together just recently. The underside is rusted pretty badly, so I basically wanna have as much fun with it as I can until I find a nicer Justy to swap stuff over to.. SO!.. i built a snorkel using intercooler parts and random intake pieces from other vehicles I've scrapped over the years. (There's a drain down by the fender) Bought a $25 filter and pieced it all together. I cut a plate for the top so it can't collect snow (I only plate and drive this car in the winter) and screwed it right into the A pillar. Let's see fools try and steal THAT! It's so rusty as it is, what's one more hole. I bought a spoiler at the auto-wrecker. It's off an old Dodge Neon. I measured it out, made sure the hatch could still open, then I literally screwed it to the roof. I used some fake hydraulic pistons from a crappy piece of Jysk furniture to reinforce the rear corners. It looks pretty sweet for $15 lol Also, I took this turbo off a Volvo. it spins freely, and all the seals seem decent. No coked up oil. That's it for now.

How is this a rally car? Why the farcle would a "rally car" have a snorkel on the outside?? Your car is a hunk of shit and even more so with neon and furniture parts. Give up.

Yeah there is nothing wrong with a snorkel on a rally car. I put a similar one on my justy because the stock intake was sucking up so much dirt.

YES!!!! poking the beees nest again. We all know this place is a joke. Come on, the only mod is a douchbag that dosent care about anything but stock justys.
As far as the snorkus lol... I have yet to see a car that rallys with a hacked piece of shit PVC pipe intake system.. As far as mine... when i had my hood scoop it worked well for temps and air flow. You can show me all the graphs and data you want. In the end i noticed a difference. Dosent matter now it will be for show only really because the motor is half way to being swapped out.
Go back to waxing your justys nerds.

Ummm actually the two people that commented on the snorkel are two people that have probably never waxed there Justys. Just saying I'm not babying mine this thing is just for fun.

Thanks Matt!! And xtremeguywhatever, I won't get personal with you, but it's pretty obvious to me that your opinion is poorly regarded around here. I'm guessing it's the same in most other areas of your life. If you think I give TWO CRAPS about my Justy, you would be mistaken. Only one crap is given and that crap takes the form of 'how much fun can I have with this car until it explodes and I buy a less rusty one.' The evidence for this can be found in the hole I cut in the fender with tin snips and the self-tapping screws I drilled through my own roof. My snorkel is awesome. Everyone who has seen it thinks so. And it functions mechanically.. very well. I got the idea when I had to drive under a flooded bridge last year. the Justy made it through, but many cars didn't and people were standing on the hoods of their stalled out cars waiting for tow trucks. Obviously it's not a real rally car cause real rally cars would'nt BEND IN HALF if you drive them too hard. This car will. I'm just having fun dude.. If you wanna have a serious internet nerd car debate about proper car mechanics, we can talk about my 88 New Yorker on 100 spoke wire wheels that i'm installing air bags in over the winter. Or my wife's 84 Jetta with the GTI engine I swapped in. Or my 87 Celica GTS with the JDM engine I swapped in. Or my 52 Mercury 1 ton truck I'm currently restoring.. Beat it nerd. MY JUSTY RULES!

Update: So I bought 4 cheap-o rally lamps and installed them on the front bumper and ran them to a 40 amp fuse on the dash. They look awesome at night.. I wanted to modify them to accommodate larger, super-bright bulbs but the housings aren't large enough, so meh. I also purchased a carbon fiber muffler off a crotch rocket my buddy stripped for parts. It should sound decent enough.. I just need to find a way to weld it so it sits behind and a little higher than the rear bumer so I can A) show it off a lil and B) it doesn't collect water when I bomb through swamp water Bring on the hate mail! later!

You installed a snorkel, then mentioned that you installed a drain near the fender. Is this drain an open hole or a valve of some sort? If it's an open hole, then it would render the entire snorkel useless wouldn't it?
Also, the turbo that you have choosen is far too big for the Justy engine. Technically, my turbo is too large for the engine as well (IHI RHB5), as it comes on around 3500-4000 rpm. I like this as it allows me to drive down the highway and stay out of boost below 110km/h. Even with my turbo, the engine simply runs out of steam by 6000rpm anyways. I'm afraid that the justy engine will run out of steam long before that Volvo turbo spools up enough to make any useful impact.

Good points, both of them. The drain is a one-way ball-bearing valve.. I have all the faith in the world in it.
As for the turbo, yeah you are totally right. It's hilariously big. I may end up trading my friend for the turbo off his 200sx which is way smaller.
I've also given some thought to whether or not my engine will survive even a day or two with boost. I'm not in a panic to accomplish the turbo install immediately. I'm contemplating finding a spare engine to build. But I found a wrecked Imprezza for $550... so that's got me thinking as well.
But if I swap, then I'll wanna really really do the car up nice.. and there's so much rust, it just bums me out..

That turbo looks like it might be off a TDI? It has two actuators. That normally means it's VVT (variable vein tech) so if I'm right then there is actually a chance of it spooling.
Trouble is, those turbos aren't designed to work well with the amount of heat generated by a petrol engine. It was always the reason VVTs were not fitted to petrol-engine cars.
If it's not a VVT turbo then it does look too big. The idea of spooling your turbo at 3500-4000 is a good one. But to get the most out of it you need to extend the engine rev range with a modified camshaft.

Yeah i've realized the turbo i have is WAY too bog for this engine. I'm saving up to buy a wrecked wrx for the engine and drivetrain now. The turbo sits in my living room as decoration.

Turbo's from a Toyota Starlet Glanza or Turbo Cherrade would be a good start. They are made for 1300cc and under.

I wonder what are the jettings necessary to make a turbo work conveniently ahead of a carburettor. On a carb. the gaz supply is controlled by the vacuum inside the carb. itself while a contrario a pre-carb turbo provides positive pressure into it. Is the relatively low pressure (5-7 lbs) of the carbed justy's gaz pump sufficient enough to provide adequate quantities of gas for proper combustion in such a case? What is the trick? An injected engine wouldnt be easier to manage with real gaz pressure (45lbs)? I know that for some time Renault came up with such an apparatus in the 80s for the R5 or the R8. I think they had a special carb. involved but I still do not know how it was done really. But it seems it had been raced successfully in Europe there and then (rally, hillclimbs, or am I wrong? I did not do any research though) Do you have before and after numbers or at least a real impression (like 4 wheels spinning on dry tarmac) of an obvious power boost on the pedal to be sure that the turbo is not only spinning around kind of idling in the intake air flux and not really contributing to any signifiant power boost? With all my respect for the magnificient work provided to your engine though. Regards, C.D.
