Hey guys, I have a 91 4wd that has an unknown history but 86k miles. I've only had it on the road for about 10 days. It was running great but obviously has some pump or seal issues as there is the common leaking around the oil pump area. In the last few days it's started idling rough when hot with flickering oil light. I've read all through every post and am aware of the situation. It sounds like some people just keep driving it and eventually get around to fixing and some people say park it and fix immediately. I know that much of this is speculative without a complete and proper diagnosis.
I was going to run it 130 miles today, but I'm torn about whether I should. I put in 20w50 to try and bring the pressure up, but it only helps slightly with the hot idle problem. Is the oil pump something that will suddenly quit entirely or do I have some time?
thx!

If you've read "all through every post" you'd know that you're in a bad spot. That light comes on with oil pressure at less than 3psi or so. Normal operating pressure is over 10 times that amount. Running with insufficient oil pressure=rapidly increased engine wear=engine failure.
I installed an oil pressure gauge on my car to keep an eye on the oil pump issue. Easy to do. You can buy one at any auto parts store. I would put a gauge on just to make sure that the oil pressure gauge and warning light are working properly. Though, if the engine starts idling rough at the same time the light starts flickering, that kind of proves what's going on.
Soooo.....good luck on the drive, make sure your AAA towing is up to date.

I've decided not to take the trip in the Justy. Basically I was so excited about the prospect of taking it on the run that I was trying to convince myself that there was some element of hope. Just after I posted I came to my senses and realized how stupid the question was.
Thanks for the reply to the knuckle-headed question.

No stupid questions, just glad you didn't drive it that far. That would probably have proved to be stupid. Sounds like it's time to research oil pump replacement & all that.
Most Justys have received less preventative maintenance than they needed over the years. Looks like yours is in that boat. Fix it up and have fun in it.

I'm just going around and following up on some of my early posts.
My immediate problem of oil pressure ended up being a idle/vacuum issue so I was able to get by for the last several years and 3k miles using 20w50. I finally just did all the intended repairs... oil pump, water pump, timing belt, alternator and belt, front cover gasket, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, machined flywheel, and clutch. I'll be adding an oil pressure gauge at next oil change.
