So on a Justy, can you replace just the CV joint or do you have to get a whole new axle?

Looking through parts suppliers today, I can only find complete axle assemblies. I know I priced this same thing in January, my notes had rock auto at 36$ for a CV front-outer (for my 1990 4WD). When I priced the sub-components of the Gen2 front right axle it came to near 100$. I crossed that out when I found the complete axle assembly for 60$ from oreilley's (rock auto has them 75~100$US today). Besides, the axle ends may see different wear, but simple things like the rubber CV-boots age about the same. If you rebuild one CV-end, then at least replace the CV-boot on the other CV-end for piece of mind. - or - Go with the whole new axle save yourself the additional work -RRJ

Thanks for the info RRJ. Its for a car I'm going to look at and hopefully buy. 1994 5 Speed, 4WD, only 147,000km. the guy says all it needs is a CV Joint. According to your information they aren't as expensive as I thought they would be either. I'd go with replacing the whole axle.
Thanks

For the amount of work required to replace/rebuild just one Joint is much more then replacing the entire halfshaft.
Much easier to just replace the assembly

It sounds like the left outer on my old '91 is going out again. This car has never had the hubs changed out so I am going to see what is involved there, but I guess I will just go get another LF axle. This will be around the 5th on this car I think. Seems like something must be messed up in the suspension or something.
