1991 Subaru Justy GL 4wd manual I was wondering if there was a repair for this situation.
1-I had the car on a lift, and first I noticed that the front left tire was moving, when not in gear. Is that normal?
2- I then put the car in gear and the front two tires move.
3- Next, (which I regret now) I put the car in 4wd. The rear tires turned.
4- However, there was a really nasty noise.
5- I left the car in 4wd, put the car on the ground, and the rear drive shaft turns freely. I'm wondering if I broke something?
6- Can it be repaired?

You must make sure the fornt and rear tires are turning the same speed when engaging 4wd. That nasty noise was the two gears trying to mesh. Ive done it under power and didnt break anything but it was very sketchy.
Can you completly rotate the driveshaft around? You shouldnt be able to with the rear wheels on the ground.

I jacked up the car, and the rear left cv axle is damaged.
I also put the car in 4wd with all four wheels off the ground. If I helped the driveline move it did rotate the rear wheels, but the damaged axle seemed to mess things up.
I hope it is the axle?

We replaced the bad axle in the rear of the justy.
This is what I see:
We put the car in 4wd and the rear wheels turn with the driveshaft. Both rear wheels go in the same direction. Is that correct?
In the front wheels I can only get the wheels to go in opposite directions.
So do I have a transfer case problem or a differential issue?

That sounds normal to me, Justys don't have locking differentials so the wheels should turn in opposite directions.
I think your just confusing yourself with the way your testing the 4wd. Instead of lifting the car up just go find a gravel parking lot, mud hole or other slippery surface and see how the car responds in 2wd vs 4wd.
