I have a 1988 5sp 2WD with about 80,000 miles on it. The clutch was just redone before i took an 800 mile trip. on the trip i was getting 33 mpg, but now in city driving i'm getting 28 mpg. The trip was about two weeks ago. The car runs alright, but sometimes on start-up it sorta stutters a bit, but smooths out when hot. The spark plugs also have less than 1,500 miles on them. (they are quad tip platinum ones) I keep tire pressures up, and religiously check fluids. I'm guessing its somthing with the carb, but all the vacume lines look good. Any help is greatly appreciated. It is naturally aspirated as well, no turbo yet.

I had an 88 & routinely got 36 city & 40 mpg highway.. My 94 gets 39/43 mpg. It helps that I am in Florida,[ flat land], warm weather, so the choke, etc was rarely needed.I drive very conservately, also. Both are 2wd 5spds. On the carbed 88, there is a vacuum line just to the back, & right of the carb, that would come off, on mine, at times. Thus affecting mileage, & idling rough. Also, make sure the choke opens all the way after warm. An oxygen sensor, or bad cat convertor, would be next to look at.

I was getting 35ish mpg, I then replaced a dirty air filter and slightly worn spark plugs, now I'm getting 39ish. This is with 95 5spd 4wd Fuel Injected.
Tire pressure does affect the Justy more so than other cars. Carb'd Justy's may get worse mileage than FI in my opinion.
I agree that the Cat would be another possibility. However you should verify that your Carb'd Justy has an O2 sensor. Most carburetted engines do not have O2 sensors.

I think mine might have an O2 sensor because there is some sorta sensor in the middle of the exhaust maninfold. I know there is enogh electonics connected to this carb to really screw up how it runs if you blow the fuse with that circuit.

Yes, it does have a O2 sensor. If you need one, you can buy an $$$ dealer one, a fairly $$, " Autozone" one, or many auto parts stores have a generic, Bosch, about $24, that works well. but may need to splice a wire to it.. Then disconnect battery, for awhile,,,, reconnect ,,to reset computer. The carbs are a NIGHTMARE ! If I can get one running pretty good, I don't touch them!!Use carb cleaner to clean in & out what is visible. I have taken loose fuel line, & squirted thru there to free up stuck needle. Dealer offered me a rebuilt one, once, for a " discounted" price of $880 !! $880 is a lot of carb spray!!
