...so here's the thing...I bought a Nice '91 out of the 'States with great rust free body, and dead fuel pump...fixed the fuel pump, and have discovered the trans will drive only in reverse?!? the forward gears won't even light up the dashboard indicators, so I assume it's electrical issues, but I have 28 volts at the brush connector in all gear positions...brushes are recently replaced, linkage is fine, suggestions are welcome...

The transmission range switch on the shift lever can get faulty and cause the problem you're having. Pull the cover off of the shifter and have a look. The dash indicators should light up with each gear selected.

I've noticed it's a bit weak to engage reverse, and the indicators, (when compared to my '93) seem as if they're not so bright...could I have a low-voltage condition somewhere? ...oh, btw, in the last hour or so, the Ds indicator light now comes on, but no matching response from the trans...

Hmmm... interesting problem. I know if the clutch controller doesn't get the signal that a gear has been selected it won't energize the clutch. With the engine off try putting the shifter in drive and then unhook the shift cable from the transmission. Put the shifter in park or neutral to get it started then shift into reverse and see if it drives. The tranny will still be in drive mechanically and the clutch controller should get the signal that reverse has been selected (since reverse did work). If it still doesn't move it's probably an internal mechanical problem.
