I am looking into converting my FWD Justy to 4WD but have no earthly idea what that involves. My question is, are Gen one 4WD systems different from Gen two? I know Gen ones are vacuum operated but did that change when Gen twos came along with fuel injection and a more streamlined body? Can you mix parts from both generations such as Gen two trans with Gen one rear differential? Engineers love to change things from year to year so somebody help me out here. Thanks!

Well I own a 1993(Gen2) and my car was swapped to a 5-speed from a ECVT. So I am saying this in confidence that it was all GEN2 stuff used but, basically there are 3 wires(2 mains, 1 ground) that go from the switch in the gearshift to the vacuum solenoid which is supplied vacuum from the intake manifold when the switch is actuated it trips the solenoid to send vacuum down 1 of the 2 lines to the transfer case, turning the 4wd on.
And then to turn it off the reverse process, and vacuum being sent down the opposite vacuum line to shut it off
So the whole system consists of Switch, 2 main/1ground, Vacuum solenoid with 2 inlet and 2 outlet and vacuum lines going from the intake manifold and from the solenoid to the transfer case.
Like I said, thats just what I taught myself while diagnosing my 4WD problem yesterday, I could be wrong with something. But everything seemed straight forward.
My Justy is a 93 GL 5 speed conversion
