Is this even right? No wonder these things don't average in the 40's or higher. Are there any 5th gear swaps that will lower the rpms to about 2.5k @ 60mph?
I'm tired of going 65mph and hitting close to 4k rpms. Its ridiculous.

EPA highway mileage ratings are based on a constant 55mph speed. For every 5mph over that, the mpg loss averages about 10%. A Justy rated at 46mpg would only get 35.8mpg at 65mph using that formula, a truth to wich I can testify. My FWD Justy got 36.4 mpg on a road trip to GA this weekend. I averaged 65mph @ somewhere around 3400rpm. If you want the high mileage you'll have to slow down to the EPA baseline speed of 55mph. If your area of the country is like mine and drivers drive there like they drive here, that could get you killed or run off the road.

I can tell you without any theorizing but from actual experience the best mileage I get is when I am balls out over 4000 RPM. Best mileage I ever got was 43 MPG pedal to the metal over Snoqualmie mountain pass at 70 MPH. Now explain that!

I wouldn't say "are" but "were" in this case as the Justy was built in the era of 55mph speed limits. My old 4WD Justy seemed extremely happier at around 55mph and got much better fuel mileage running at lower rpm. My current '93 FWD Justy is pretty much exactly where you mention as I usually travel around 65-70mph and get around 34-35mpg out of it. If I speed up so the revs are around a constant 4000rpm, my mileage is around 28-32mpg but this is at a higher speed than the '91 4x4. My '93 is stock except that I am running 165/65-14 Potenza RE-92's on '95 Escort GT rims modified (properly) to fit. The reason I have the '93 really is that I did not end up using 4WD and I appreciate the lower final drive of the FWD gearbox. I raise an eyebrow at the for sale ads I see occasionally for a Justy with 40+ mpg advertised. Granted I usually drive a wee bit too fast and keep the revs up, but still I never did really get great mileage out of my Justys, even when trying for it and recording data.

I have to be careful not to rev past 5k all the time (freakin tach is sticking constantly - useless - I really have to fix that). My experience is 70~75mph for a tank on the freeway gives me just over 36mpg. My daily drive to work (1/2 freeway + 1/2 city) yields 32mpg. I do not drive slow, and love smiling while looking to see the face of the next driver who foolishly underestimated the Justy. -RRJ

Except in the dead of winter, I get consistently 40+ mpg with my '94 DL...but I only average about 30 miles a day on back roads at about 40-50 mph, no highway travel. My Justy rarely sees 70+ mph, only occasionally when I get a wild streak, or some numbnut pisses me off and thinks the Justy is an old rusty POS that he can tailgate

I guess that I just should be getting higher with a 1.2 and five forward gears is all. I get it to 5th whenever possible and I usually cruise well below the "curve" and throttle is just barely touched. I'm going to check my timing tonight to see how good I am (timed by sight/sound recently) and now I have a gun. As a side note to derail the thread a little bit...I hate my heather. The mixing door cable is effed up and I'm leaking forced air out of every nook and cranny of the heating/vent system...lol

a little update...my odometer is .1/mile off. This was confirmed through three roadside odo checks and my speedo is around 4% slow. When it shows 66mph I'm actually going 70mph and when I'm going 70mph it's actually 75mph.
So looks like my mileage is roughly 38mpg.

SeattleJusty, I have no explanation for that incredible mileage number! Guess that blows my explanation to bits!
Drove to Marrietta, GA today in my 89 FWD (578 miles round trip). Mostly interstate with a little suburban stop-and-go driving in Marrietta. Averaged 42.2 mpg. My highway speed varied somewhere between 57-62mph with occaisional bursts of 65 - 70 in Atlanta keep up with traffic!
Zach, I was wondering what speed 4000 rpm translates to in your Justy? My Justy's speed / rpm is: 55 mph = 2750 rpm 70 mph = 3500 rpm I started to push it past 3500 rpm today to see what 4000 rpm looked like, but backed off at 3750 and 75mph. My guess is 4000 rpm in my Justy equals 80+mph. (and a serious ticket!)

Good job on the great mileage Don't worry about speeding tickets on the freeways in Atlanta. My experience in ATL is anything slower than 70 in the far right lane will get you passed & the finger and I never saw a cop hand out a speeding ticket there despite the 55MPH law. My guess is that unlike Seattle they actually have crime there and have shit to do besides pester people with speeding tickets. On the other hand ATL has this wonderful thing I tried, I think it was pronounced, puh. . . puhhh. . . pah. . . . pahrrrrr. . . . . . pahrkee. . . parking!!! Yeah that's it, parking! Well anyway I wrote to Seattle's new mayor and suggested we get some parking too but he hates automobiles so we're farcleed on that. Keep that 2WD Justy, they get the best mileage BTW I love Atlanta, it is one of my four favorite places in the U.S.A.

I'm running P155/13 tires all around, inflated to 38psi (they look flat at anything lower!) PS, I love GA as well, specifically the cities of Jonesboro and Griffin EDIT: 60mph on the speedo says 4k rpms. I have the pics to prove it!! GPS says 63mph as well.

my old 1988 2wd used to get 40mpg with a friends foot, 35-38mpg with my foot (freeway and general driving) I once got 50mpg out of it, but that was exclusively 30-40mph no stops in the city (i had the lights timed out for 15 miles each way) The worst I every got was 32mpg either beating the crap out of it or with two fat guys, tools and stuff for a weekend road trip. (an hour of that tank the pedal was held to the floor with my cd case 90mph bottom of the hills 45-55 at the tops.)
