This thread has been relocated from the Comedy section:
Danimal, please start a new thread in the most suited category. Yeah Danimal, please start a new thread in the most suited category. Alright then, I will. It seems that most everyone here thinks it is a joke to switch from 4WD to FWD? Regardless of how amused one may be with the particular interest to do such a thing, will anyone please further humour me anyway and offer their advice? Most specifically to whether or not the transmission can be maneuvered out of the engine bay with the engine still in place(Can I leave the radiator in place? Perhaps only the fan ought to be removed so I don't have to drain any coolant)?, and will I need to change the wiring and computer? If I dont change the wiring there is one connector to just leave it hanging at the transmission. I also have to know if I can just seal the one extra vacuum line(from the intake manifold) which operates the 4WD and disconnect the electrical connector to the two solenoids that will no longer be needed once the vacuum hoses are removed without any trouble from the computer blinking #5 and thinking it's still got four wheels to turn if only I'll let it, which I wont because the button has been removed. So have a laugh, mates anyone!; get involved and tell me if it'll work. I have the spare wiring and computer if I need them and that really isn't too much work. Please don't leave the joke on me, out under my car struggling with a heavy gearbox too long and tall to drop down and slip forward and out from under the car. My Justy was not driven for years due a broken prop. shaft and when I put it back on the road I did so without replacing that part. I haven't used the four wheel drive ever and certainly will not do so until at least after I pull the whole motor from this car for a rebuild; after such an investment might I re-install the 4X4 capable components. Thanks, -Danimal

I'll personally convert any member's 5 speed car from 4wd to 2wd for FREE(I keep removed parts and you bring car to Ottawa). This should prove with model is 'better'. stacks Perhaps Stacks could offer up all of the details you need.

Perhaps Stacks could offer up all of the details you need. Thanks, I hope he will. "88 4wd has .631 5th gear vs all other justys @ .675(due to big ring size!)" -Stacks So when I make the change I'll use more petrol in fifth(and fourth as well)? Will the weight I'll lose make it worth it? It would be nice to have a lower fourth gear and a higher fifth... -Danimal

**Danimal** is this the car with the cap on the 4wd 5speed? Congratulations on your prompt fix, Enjoy your 4WD! The back end of my transmission is closed off and I'm without 4X4 capability: , all due to a broken prop shaft. I've never yet had my 4X4 function working and removed the switch before ever pressing it.

**Danimal** is this the car with the cap on the 4wd 5speed? Yes it is. *edit- Is it in the way? Will it be what holds me up? I don't think so; the transmission is almost out. I did remove the radiator and it surely helped. The transmission is totally free but still stuck in the engine bay. Will it make it, or should I just free the engine from it's mount briefly to let the transmission have room to come past? -Danimal

Can you loosen the motor to lightly push it away from trans? -T

Thank you, Trevor, it did help give a little more space to let the engine down slightly, pivoting on the mount, as I also lowered the transmission. I have got the transmission out now. I did also remove my end cap and it was still a very close fit; thank you **RedRoo** for the warning if that was one. I also removed the valve that allows fresh air to the second catalytic converter in order to let the 4X4 actuator swing up as the transmission twisted out. A little jiggery-pokery and it's not too bad of a one man job. Proceeding as planned with the 4X4 computer still installed and thinking the extra line from the removed 4X4 system would be the perfect spot for a vacuum gauge..? Can't wait to be rid of those heavy solenoids... I'm losing ≈ thirty pounds(?). I'm not panning to remove anything at the rear, the rear wheels will continue to roll in "FWD mode". -Danimal

**Danimal** is this the car with the cap on the 4wd 5speed? I was going to ask "why go through the hassle or removing it?" then you talk about weight savings. Are you intending to get the different final drive ratio of the FWD 5speed as well? --edit I can't find a good reference between FWD/4WD, so I do not know if there is a difference.-- Does the 4wd ECU matter? I ask because I really do not know. -good stuff -RRJ

Does the 4wd ECU matter? I ask because I really do not know. Thanks for the interest **RedRoo**. I think that I wont get as well in fuel economy with the lower fourth and fifth gears and don't know that my minimal weight reduction will be enough to make it worth it. Every little bit helps, I suppose. It will be helpful to have a lower fourth gear because I have a mountain to cross on my daily commute. I'll soon find out on my own if there will be any trouble with the ECU; I could change that out if needed but would like to go back to 4WD one day so why do unnecessary changes twice? I'm just guessing, “why would it not work?” but I never know about these computers and things; is there going to be a timing problem or something when I reach fourth or fifth gear because of the different ratios? Perhaps when I re-install the 4X4 gearbox I can rebuild it with a FWD 4th gear? -Danimal

Expect overall lower gearing from the FWD with smaller final. 4.4(gen I FWD) 4.8(gen II FWD) 5.2(gen I 4WD) 5.285(gen II AWD) Thank you, Stacks! Do you know if it is possible to mix and match gear ratios between transmissions? I want the lower fourth gear but to also keep the higher fifth. I'm thinking that the gearbox I've installed is from a GenII (92?). Is there anyway to know from the outside of the gearbox? I have not dug-out my other spare gearbox (which originally came out of my GenI) for a comparison. One test drive so far with my new FWD and all went well. The gear selection isn't quite as smooth as my AWD transmission has... -Danimal

5Th gear is the only one detacheable from the Layshaft(Input). Try using your 88'4wd's 5'th gears if ya wanna retain that lower .631 Hopefully I can install the FWD layshaft into my 4X4 transmission and using my 4X4 5th gear as well...? I'll break one down soon enough and figure it all out. Well,.. We'll see about all that later. For now, the change out is a success! I haven't calculated my MPG but will do so after this first tankful. The gear selection not feeling as smooth may only come down to the longer linkage and gearstick. The car definitely feels lighter; it's been very windy lately! Should the speedometer be incorrect now that I have switched to FWD? I did use the speedo. cable from the FWD transmission but the stock 4WD meter still in the dash. Didn't think this would matter but during recent holiday travel my wife told me I was speeding(she was following behind me at one point). -Danimal

The latest pics are of a gen I, lucky you. Are these my most recent photos to which you were referring, Stacks? In the bellhousing question thread: I'm not finding the groove for the dust shield so this is a GenI transmission? If that's the case then my speedo ought to be correct. -Danimal

So then why in the name of farcle is this still in the comedy section? This HAS to be the most backwards I have ever seen this site. If there is anyone else who can tell a good story of how nice detailed information ended up in the comedy section please entertain me!

Esteemed members, let it be known that the original poster decided of his own free will to begin this thread in the Non Justy-related stuff section on the Comedy board. I did recently inquire privately to the O.P. whether or not he really wanted it or intended it to be there and he confirmed that he did in fact decide on the comedy board. I think this thread is wonderful just my opinion, I hope that's okay and I would be happy to move this whole thread to the 4WD or Projects or Guides boards if the O.P. would bless it.

Thanks for the support, gentlemen. I have moved the information to a new thread. --> ♠ Going from 4WD to FWD-only is a joke, right? Regardless, particular procedures about doing so should have been posted elsewhere in first place. Furthermore, the members of this forum post mostly Justy related homour in this section; it ought not be under a 'non-Justy related stuff' description. I don't want a racist joke-fest posing as a decent, humour sub-section on this forum! -Danimal
