And ignition timing retardation to compensate?

Before the engine teardown, I had the timing advanced to 13 degrees because of the altitude here (almost 5,000 feet). I'm expecting that I'll still be advancing the timing - we'll see how 10-13 degrees does & play around with it.

All 3 exhaust valves needed to be replaced. I left work early so I could pick up everything from the machine shop and hopefully assemble the engine this evening on my kitchen table on cardboard (I first presented to my wife that I could do it in the living room on cardboard on the carpet, which she politely vetoed & said to use the kitchen table with cardboard on it, saying that she usually sends my 6 year old son, our youngest child - oldest one is 24 years old, into the dining area to play with his playdough on the kitchen table. It's about the same thing, right? lol - she's pretty great, huh? (it's around 0 degrees to -5 degrees outside at night). Anywho, The head, crank, assembled pistons, & block are beautiful, (I know, I'm a gear head - those parts just do something to my heart! lol) and I check out the new, oversized main & rod bearings: Don't fit!! The place who sent them to the machine shop sent the WRONG ONES! - dang! Another week of driving my wife's minivan (17mpg - Uuggg! ) 106 miles a day on my commute! Anyone have a Justy I could borrow for a week ? lol. Doug

Hey,
If you go to RockAuto, they have 5 exaust valves left, cheap. BeckArnley.
I bought 8 exhaust valves recently ebay. Turned out to be Genuine Subaru for about thirty dollars shipped.
They're like twenty bucks ea. dealer.
The exhaust does get burnt pretty bad and after cleaning they were very badly pitted. If you grind a lot off them and the seats, it will alter your rocker geometry.
You want the piviot to be centered on the valve tip if possible.

Update;
Friday, the wrong main & rod bearings arrived, so I couldn't get my justy back on the road over the weekend.
They were supposed to arrive yesterday, but the FedEx plane had a mechanical problem and was delayed, so I couldn't start putting my engine back together last night.
Crap - I hate it when things don't come together.
