So when in reverse the belt and pulleys are spinning backwards.

I also have a complete parts tranny that's currently in several pieces. I can take some pictures of it this next week. Let me know if there's anything in particular you need a pic of.

Is there a particular reason you want to know how forward and reverse are selected? Are you having problems with one of these transmissions?

hi justy4x4 thanks for posting that, very informative, is there an online worshop manual anywhere ?, l bought a manual on cd of ebay and its usless nothing like the pics you have there, the reason l was asking about the forward/reverse selection was that l am biulding an offroad buggy out of the justy mechanicals and l was hopeing to mount the engine behind the seats but would have to reverse the direction of the drive to do this, l have come to my senses and decided to put the engine in the front as swapping the drive over dosent look easy, how is the 4 wheel drive selected ? on the manual gearbox there is what looks like a vacume diaframe that engages the rear, but on the auto gearbox its not there, is it electricly selcted ie motor ? l have stripped the justy now, heres a few pics now that the engine/box are out it looks more complicated than l imagined there seems to be a lot of wires and connections, maybe a manual box may have been a better choice

Wow, that sounds like a fun project! The ECVT wouldn't work too well running in reverse since it won't upshift in that direction. I don't think the reverse idler gears would hold up either.
The 4wd is actuated with an electric solenoid that redirects hydraulic pressure to a tiny piston/servo that locks it in. The majority of the trans wiring is for the electro-magnetic clutch. The clutch is electronically controlled and the trans is totally mechanical/hydraulic.
I'm not aware of any "good" online manuals but someone else on here might know of some.

hi Danimal no need to be disapointed it is a rusty justy, the pic of the bottom in the post above dosent really show the rot as its been covered in underseal to try and hide it a bit l suspect, heres a few more pics for you, these 2 show the shell where the steering rack/arms pass through into the wheel arches, both have holes in and the one side has been patched in the past, this side the floor is seperating from the cill section and the other has 3 different layer of patching and 2 skins on the cill and heres the seat belt anchor point, one good tug and the whole section pulled straight out and you can see l have started making a jig from the suspension pick up points l agree perhaps not the worst justy in the world but bad enough for me not to want to drive round in it, l dare say it could be welded up if you were desperate enough but over here it would be much much cheaper to just go and buy another one, heres a couple on ebay, the first one just wants brake pads for its annual test and the second dident even attract a single bid at £150 and it came with a spare engine and box and the body was in exellent shape cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=320394703218cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=290327218134so worry not it was either me using all its bits or it was off to the crusher oh and thanks for the links very usefull cheers Andy

h'mm my links are not working, l will have a fiddle To fix your links put an earl immediately before the link in brackets, and a second earl after a slash immediately after the link and also in brackets. Or, select the whole link in the "Message:" field and then click the button with the picture of the Earth and the page of paper in the "Add Tags:" field, and it will do it for you. That makes it a clickable address.I hope that helps. no need to be disapointed Thanks for the extra pictures! Now I am only disappointed that a justy was left to rust away like that. I am looking forward to see what you will do with it. Thank you for the Ebay links but I am a GenI loyalist(I am strictly referring to being loyal to GenI Justys; this is not a political forum!) and not living in the UK. -Danimal

Indeed Jintei, keep poking and prodding around underneath...I do this every year. You cannot imagine how much rust hides beneath undercoating. The areas of rust that baloo has shown here are exactly the same areas that I have treated and fixed on my Justy. Along the rocker panels where it joins the floorpan, the unibody beneath the rear bumper, and the apron in the front. My choice of filler is now JBWeld...that stuff is fantastic, hardens like steel! But is expensive...you can only buy small quantities at a time. I've also replaced one fender and the other one is just about rusted away (broke loose at the bottom). One of my doors is also pretty badly rusted along the bottom...that's my next fix! Good Luck!!
