I'm new to Justy's and the other older Subaru's with locked 4wd transfer cases. I see that plenty of people rally these cars but does anyone set them up for asphalt? Similarly-sized and weighted FWD cars do well at autocross and I wonder if the benefit of the extra traction is enough to outweigh the problem of the lack of a center differential and the extra weight of the added driveline. The oldschool Subaru is just one of many inexpensive cars on my list of cars to check out as candidates for a $2006 Challenge car--if you're not familiar, a magazine called Grassroots Motorsports holds this event where you build a car to autocross, drag race and show for $200x (you get an extra dollar every year :-D), and within that budget you can do whatever your hands are capable of -- aftermarket forced induction, engine or entire driveline swaps, suspension geometry changes, weight reduction, etc. So anyway...big huge sticky race tires on all four corners...is this a recipe for destruction of the transfer case on solid ground? Expect more n00b questions in the near future :-P

i dont have race tires, but i dont manage my justy... pedal to the metal in 4wd in cubes havent made any problemes yet... if the car is lightened it should not be a real mater. the only thing is that since ther is tention, there is a lost of energy and power...

Well the car is fun to drift on loose surfaces, and balanced well, but me thinks as bobbey... you would be losing alot of power to trying to spin/slip wheels on pavement. I think RustyJusty on this site, routinely A/C's his, or somebody anyway.. not sure if its in 4WD at the time though. but a Viscous coupling out of, say a jeep cherokee can be had fairly cheap... bolt it in the to rear drive shaft some where... and well Bob's you uncle!

Justy's 4WD is not very good in asphalt. You get binding between front and rear due to the lack of a center differential in tight turns. Justy comes to its own when the conditions start to be slippery. that's why you can have better times than fwd cars with twice the power in rallies. When in asphalt, I take off in 4wd to prevent wheelspin, go to 2wd in 3rd gear, and hit 4wd button before I start to negotiate a high speed corner. In slow speeds, 4wd loses you power, and you always have to slip the clutch.

i just got my wheels laser aligned yesterday with new tyres...4x4 is a dream now, no ultra muscle to turn it on tight corners and i can do it with a finger! before this i would agree with you all, but now i am not so sure. it may loose a little power on the corners, but if you keep it in the power you can hammer it out the corners without a problem or slipping wheels, and sometimes the back pushes more than the front so you can drift a little (heheh!).....unlike the 2wd counterparts
i definately recommend you all getting the alignmet checked! the results were fantasticly suprising for me
