I recently bought a1988 Justy 4wd, 5 speed, manual, RS it was a California car now it’s a Michigan car. My question is what would be the best way to keep rust off the under carriage and the body? There is minimal rust on the under carriage now I was going to do some sand blasting but after that I’m not sure what coating to apply on it (powder coating, paint...). Then on the body I was thinking of rhino lining along the strip underneath the driver and passenger doors and maybe the bumpers and of coarse I’m going to repaint the whole body. What do you think?

Well, I think you got a better shot at winning the Power Ball Lottery than you do keeping rust off a Justy in Michigan! I hope you are laughing...Seriously, having spent the first 27 of my 42 years of my life in "The Rust Belt" (NY) I have fought and lost the battle with rust many times. I have used all the weapons you mentioned (Except powder coating) and in the end, the rust always won...All my best efforts did was slow down the process. Realistically, this is the best result you can hope for. I wish I could say something more positive but, like an old body man told me 20 years ago...Rust never sleeps! Good Luck, Jim

I guess you're right, I'll just have to find out more about powder coating. If its over a couple a hundred $ I'll just paint it. I'm kinda lucky because my dads a painter, he just hasn't been doing it that often. He used to restore GTO's he even had his own shop, that was like 20 years ago though. Dad's done a few paint jobs lately so it should turn out pritty good. This project is going to be my first he's going to work on it with me but I really want to do it to learn how. Its going to be a pearl white with black rims.

Man it must be nice to have a bodyman in the family. I don't know much about it, but I think that powder coating = big $. Rhino lining also not cheap but would be good in the areas you mentioned. One of my other vehicles is an old Bronco (1970) and I know some of the bronco boys have rhino lined almost their entire body shell. There are also cheaper DIY types of linings like that, but I would imagine not as good. There are also other products I have seen that supposedly stop rust, paint it right on the rust, it goes through some sort of chemical process to deactivate the rust, and stop it in the future. Might just be smoke and mirrors though, not sure if it actually works.
On a side note, I didn't realize there was an RS model in 88, thought it was in 89, maybe 90 only. I actually have an 89 RS parts car.

have a look at Waxoil, Wurth and Hammerite products. some are inhibitors, some claim to turn rust back to solid metal, some just protect against it. if your willing to go all the way back to bare metal (always the preferred option for restoration!) then get an Etch Primer. this goes down as the first coat onto the metal and acts in a way that it becomes one with the steel. it does this (i think it has an acid type chemical in it, but will have to check my book) by 'eating' into the metal and setting, a bit like a polycement becomes part of the original plastic you were gluing. if you get stone chips it wont go to the metal as it is actually the metal...i hope that makes sense! then you get your next primer, and other coats of paint. normally from bare metal a good paint job will have about 6-7 coats. then you waxoil all the underneath of the car and arches, sills and box sections etc. its not a permanent fix as steel will always try going back to its raw state, but it will last much longer. im not sure where you go for it, but there is always Ziebarting. i think they use electrosis to change the state of the molecules in the steel?? but i dont actually know much about it at all

Alot of great ideas I,m not so sure I want to do a absolute complete restoration because that costs time. This is my first car and I,m going to be using it alot, work, school, golf so I might have to do it piece by piece but good ideas though Ill check more into them.
Oh yeah what is the difference between the RS and the normal model? My justy has front and rear sway bars, a skid plate which could be optional parts i dont know though.
