Hi All, I am trying to assess the rust situation underneath my '94 DL...doesn't look too bad...but discovered an area of rust I had overlooked before near the rear bumper. Was poking around and this broken piece fell out...it amounts to a conical piece of plastic with a stud in the end. Can anyone identify this piece? Again the car is a Gen2 and I believe the piece is part of the inner bumper. But is it critical to holding the bumper to the unibody?

By the small size of that bit, I'd say it's just there to help support an area of the bumper from sagging. There are a bunch of screws holding that rear bumper on.

I agree ...that was my assessment also. I see at least four major bolts holding the bumper to the unibody from underneath. Part of the lower retaining strip is rusted away leaving some of those nasty Philips head screws which won't budge. I may have to remove the bumper and have a piece of steel welded to the unibody, if I'm forced to by State inspection. Luckily its only rotted on one side...the right side is solid. Beware rust hunters that it often lurks beneath layers of undercoating and sheets of metal (unibody construction). Be thorough when poking around!
