I read through the last post on poor fuel economy - gotta say, not much useful information there...
I've got a 92 EFI 4wd 5sp, and when I first fixed it up and took it on a road trip, I was getting at least 35mpg and sometimes 40. it has been getting slowly worse and now I'm lucky to get 28. sometimes more like 23. this sucks!!! I might as well be driving my truck around....
it had been occasionally throwing an error code, but it indicated 'fuel system'... rather vague... I checked the fuel filter and pump flow/pressure, and ran some chemical through it that I have found to be quite reliable in the past, to clean out the injectors what I could.
no help.
it smells like it's running rich. when it's warm, when I come to a stop light, after about 20 seconds the idle stumbles and it almost stalls then comes back up to 750-800 or so. after that one stumble it idles fine, indefinitely. other than that, it runs awesome.
I am looking at replacing the o2 sensor, any other ideas?
thanks

You need to get in touch with somebody on here who has a factory manual for a FI model. It would have some sort of troubleshooting flowchart for that code.

the fuel pressure regulator may be going out. it's built into the fuel rail. The O2 sensor is a good place to start. I know about a fuse/capacitor in the grounding line for the injectors that would throw that code.

The O2 sensor...another item that should be (along with oil pump gears) on a regular maintenance schedule. Just think of the abuse that these guys are subject to...although I have to admit I am still running with my original sensor...my mileage has never deviated from normal (35-42mpg) since I bought my Justy in '96. One interesting anecdote: I once had a problem with the engine stalling out when coming to a stop...this must have gone on for months until I finally found the wire to the O2 sensor unplugged. Even in limp mode the engine kept on running at near-normal...and the funny thing was no CEL thrown either After I plugged the O2 wire back in, no more stalling .
