Someone swapped either my motor, or transmission before I owned this car and didn’t do it 100% right. Its currently a 93 justy EFI with a standard transmission. 3 cylnders of pure fire and fury!!!! I don't know, but...It must have originally been an automatic, OR, it was an automatic block put into a standard body. Either way something is not right on the engine-side drive shaft…. I have noticed the following, standard justys at my junkyard have a place for the CV shaft extension shaft housing, to bolt to the back of the block, on the engine side. - that would be US-passenger side. UK-driver side. My justy does NOT have the 3 bolt hole standoffs coming out from the rear of the engine block to bolt the half shaft extension to. Someone rigged a piece of flat scrap metal in between two bolts that are almost near the trans bell housing, alllll the way over to one bolt that also supports the back end of the AC compressor. They then bolted that piece of scrap metal in between them and then to the driveshaft extension shaft. That’s not working. Its making noise. It broke one of the compressor bracket bolts in the block.. The shaft is not aligned coming out of the transmission. Oh god. Please have the Subaru gods tell me what I need to do ? whats the fix that will never break? Is there a different length cv shaft to get for that side that omits the center bearing? Do I need a different engine block or transmission? I can post pictures later once I become more familiar with this forum. Repairsinsa@satx.rr.com www.myspace.com/agoodmechanic

I haven't seen an auto Justy, so I don't know exactly, but it sounds like someone hacked an old block into your car. I need to check my manuals to see if the auto had equal length shafts, which I think they do.
The other signs of a bad auto/manual swap would be missing engine mounts, and a general missmatch between the crossmembers. And unless the person was really gifted, the wires under the dash would be a complete mess.
I go for an old block in a new car. How about it Jim?

I think that must be what happend... the shifter linkage looks original. but then again, so does everything else. .. the block is missing the three journals that the CV extension shaft would bolt up to. . and my car is for sure a 1993. . whoever did the block swap must have been truly gifted because ive been driving this car for a year and im a professional mechanic on all types of high end stuff and i could never see that the motor wasnt stock. the wiring was perfect... so i guess my question is ..is there an exact CV shaft that will interchange and bolt up, or am i going to be in for swapping ends and stuff? I didnt see an obvious way to get the wheel-side end off, it appeared crimped on to the knuckle. i know on the tranny side end of the cv shaft there is a circular metal ring then it slides off... then you pop the locking ring and the inside end is totally apart and youve got some great wrist rocket ammo... but the outside end? what the heck is holding that thing together? OR- can i just go buy an older, longer half shaft and change out the passenger (US market) side rotor and or bearings? ( and i bow, before the justy gods-) thank you for help so far. oh - here, in repayment, for the help so far, if anyone of yalls ever need alldata /shop pro version screen grabs or diags let me know and i can screen grab them and post up! .. funny though, i already looked in alldata and i could find nothing on my problem.. im sure due to that its not a stock problem. www.myspace.com/agoodmechanic

OK, This is what I surmise about your Justy block situation.. Since your car is a 93 it was ONLY available with the FI engine that included the equal length axle shafts (All 93 & 94 Justys FWD and 4WD had this set up) The block in your 93 is definitely an earlier carbed block as all FI blocks from 90-94 had the mounting boss for the equal length shafts. Using a carbed block with a FI head is a common swap. (The Carbed blocks are out there in much larger supplies and are cheap to buy) To fix you problem...The least expensive way is to get a right side unequal length shaft out of a 89-92 carbed Justy. This is a direct bolt in. (Stay away from the 87-88 Gen one Justys, the outer hub bearing and splines are smaller and won't fit Gen two cars like your 93. If you want equal length shafts look for a FI block from the following Justys 1990 Justy GL FWD or 4WD 1991 Justy GL FWD or 4WD 1992 Justy GL FWD or 4WD 1993 Justy FWD or 4WD 1994 Justy FWD or 4WD Good Luck, Jim
