4WD gear knob/shifter rattles - loudly!...Sound familiar?... If you have experienced this, you know it can get maddening. Any Advice to share... fixes? (Other than relocating entire 4WD button assembly or 'sticking subway tokens in the knob')! Is there a bushing out? Thanks folks, #891989 Subaru JUSTY 4WD 124, 201 miles

The whole gear shift or just the 4wd actuator knob? For the whole gear shift, there is some rubber mounting gear underneath the car, below where shifter goes through to connect to the rest of the linkage. Not totally familiar with the set up on the 89, I know if is different that in the 88 gen1. But I know there are some rubber bushing type things under there that if worn out cause a lot of shake in the gear shift. As for the shifter knob, in any of my Justys that has always been fairly firm, not rattly. If you want to pull the knob off, in my 88 shop manual it shows a screw in the rear of the shifter knob, then a pin going into the side of the shifter knob, so should be fairly easy to pull apart if need be.

I know you didn't want to relocate the button... but I thought I'd share my experience anyway. My 4wd button also rattled horribly! I stuffed little pieces of cardboard in there and it still rattled, and made it harder to go in and out of 4wd. So I finally decided to go with a new shift knob. I bought a nice used MOMO knob off of ebay and pulled my old knob off. I cut the wires at the base of the shift lever (underneath the boot). and spliced some new wires on and ran them under the carpet and under the center console. (which also needs to be removed temporarily for the procedure). I then went down to my local hardware store and found a black switch I liked... This is VERY IMPORTANT: make sure you get an "on-on" switch. Regular ON-OFF switches will not work. They do make ON-ON switches, but they are a little harder to find. on-off-on might work, but just get the right one if you can find it. Okay, so then I cut out a little section of the plastic on my center console (on the VERY front, near the floor) and mounted the switch there and hooked it up. voila! it works great, and looks almost stock (if you can even see it!) This really only took about 40 minutes of actual work if you get the knob and switch ahead of time. very easy and no more rattle! Dylan
