I'm trying to get the knob off the gear shift in my '90 Justy. I've removed the 4wd button - but I can't get the rest off. Seems like there is maybe a pin that needs punching out?
Thanks! Warwick

W, A small screw 'facing' the dashboard and a tension pin visible from either seat about 1/3 of the way from the knob bottom hold it on. The screw is a small phillips head, the tension pin needs to be pushed out with an appropriate punch. I removed these the other day (still fixing my linkage prob ) but did not remove knob - worried about damage - the wiring seemed too tight/still connected to pull the knob from the rod. You removed the button without removing the knob?!? The exploded diagram that Esteban had posted was super helpful but link seems dead right now. Let me know if you still need a scan or I'll take a pic of the print out... Best Luck; Skill,

Yeah, if you undo the small phillips head screw facing the dash, you can pull the 4wd button out (just pry it out with screwdriver. Thanks for confirmation of the tension pin...didn't want to try to punch it out and break something!

Hey Warwick,
Did you ever have luck with the shift knob?
It looks like my 'on-car linkage fix' just came apart... my concern is how tight the wires were when I tried to remove the knob... was there a wire clip visible when you popped off the button? Last thing I need is a hidden torn wire...
Thx alot,

<Source: Excerpt from Private Message>
"At this point I haven't removed the knob...I taped it all up for painting and haven't dealt with it yet. I'll be re-wiring my AWD button to the dash I think, so I will probably cut the wiring to the button. I was able to pull the button right out of the shift knob, but yes, I'm think it will need to be disconnected to get the knob off. Not sure if you still have carpet in the car, but the the awd button wiring disconnects from the harness near the gear selector."
Cheers, W
Thanks FP,

I'm reviving this post since it had useful info for myself, first off hello justy owners. Second if you have the 4wd/4x4 subaru justy, you may find the shift knob removal fairly annoying, and moving the button from the shifter to the center console took my own time and effort to complete, but it can be done and now I'll share what I did to remove the 4x4 button and shift knob so you can customize your justy just a little more. Now first thing I did was take the button out of the knob, flathead and a little but of careful pushing you can fish it out no problem, make sure to remove the screw facing the dash so you don't break the button, next you might have noticed a horizontal tube in the center of the knob, that's a tenting screw, it's a cheeky one, so you don't break anything I would put it in neutral and rest the top of the knob agains your thigh, get a flathead that barley fits into the hole, press it to the lip of the tension screw and give it some good smacks and slowly but surely it will come out, cut the wires to your button, pull it out, twist and pull the knob off. Now this part you may have to replace your rubber boot or make a custom one like I did. The wire running down the shifter runs underneath the passenger seat to the wiring harness, it is clipped in, remove the boot to eclose the wiring and cut the plastic covering the wire, careful not to cut wires, and bam you got a wire to feed into a new toggle switch for 4wd and you can put a new knob and boot on your justy!! I hope this helps someone since I couldn't find much else. Good luck! (I will post pictures if wanted)
