Hi there
I'm in St. Catharines ON, relatively new owner of an '87 3 door... yep the carbed one, he he... Planning to build for rally, hopefully on the Ontario circut by June... Daily driving the car right now to sort out the bugs... nothing done yet other then the muffler rusted off!! sounds awful! Any thoughts suggestions etc would be great,
Alain, I have admired yours and Francois cars at Pines and others... nice! Too bad about this year's breakdown (at pines) I really missed seeing you guys run! What are your thoughts on the change of classes P1600? stiffer competition or not?
Anybody else running the carbed cars, I'm having a surging problem which I haven't yet isolated, at first I thought fuel delivery, but as it happens more and more I'm think inginition, (it happens so fast for a carbed engine) what heat range are folks running on plugs, and what about timing advance, I had mine way forward for awhile, backed it off now for fuel ecomony I can't make any internal mods (production class) so I just want to 'optimize'
Anyway looking forward to discussions on the little cars, man they're fun to throw around!
Matt

Hi Mat thats cool news! But wy a 87 carbed ? youger justy are very available and cheap...im shopping to get a 95....hopefully i will get one and sell my old one...shee is getting tired ...if you want i can sell it to you...VERY cheap (around 3000$CAD i guess ?)...almost complete....Cage, good drivetrain(from the 95 i will get), i just want to keep my rally stuff..seat, belts ect... for the p1600 they decide not to do the change for 2004...becose more and more justy and swift are jumping in to rallying....i dont know what they will do next year...but? so far we havent got beat by p2 fwd car to often...but they are alot more powerfull...so im guessing that whit a very good driver it will not be that easy. as for timing...im not a mecanic and i ad the engine tuned by pros...but what i understand is that we advance the timing to the maximum...we run 94 fuel...and use some colder sparkplugs...fuel economy is NOT what we are looking for

Why carbed? sometime you just take what is handed to you... (oh and I can get a K&N for it!!) A friend started the process, then moved away, he basically gave me the keys. Sometimes I wonder, and everybody says buy your first rally car, don't build (like they did...) but oh well, I figure time is what is being spent primarily as I can source many of the materials free or close to it, and I thought the 'old' style car looks, um, how do I say, 'funnier' There was very little rust oddly, however the front fenders have been changed and it really needs a new hood. I have a 93 shell I can get my hands on, blown motor, and ECVT, which would mean changing trannys...
Thats good news re: not changing the class structure, I guess I better get going to help out!
Did you tie the cage into the front struts... I'm tryng to decide on cage design, it seems with the poor justy it might make it a little stronger, particularily on hard hits.

hey mani think i talked to you before. Like in the fall.
I'm in Toronto.
I've got the 1988 with the EFI motor in it.
I don't really think you will have a problem witht he carbed motor.
Just take it apart and clean it up really nice, and put new seals and crap in it.
If you want a few more ponies. go find a Subaru EA82 Carbed motor, and steal the carb. From what i have heard it will drop onto the intake manifold, and has bigger venturis and stuff. PLus it looks completely stock.
If you want some spare carb motor parts. I have a garage full. Including intake manifolds, carbs (2), and a pile of other junk.

if you want to built the 93 ....i have like...4 intake and 2 or 3 head that are in good shape i dont mind leting them go ... i think thats mostly what you need to put your 87 block and trany in the 93 shell ? as for the cage...yes we have some sort of tubing around the front struts...but they are not conected to the cage.... the best way to do it would be to have a tube leaving from the botom of the cage and reaching up the frame inside the front fender...close to the shock...iv seen that on a otter justy and it look very good. we also put some scare tubing on top of the shock tower...and made a sort of frame to fit the skid plate and to attach our tow bar...this frame make the front end alot strounger... look at the black metal bar that the skid plate is bolted on...its bolted on the front and on the sides of the frame but still...this car ad almost 20 rally's and the front end is cracking and beting from everywere... I strongly suggest to seam weld everything...put gusset and metal as much as you can...around the shock tower and the table encors...everywere you can...plate it...just to keep the car scare....our front wheel look like we have some kind of a race alignement...but...seriously..its becose it all bent! LOL

DoIT, yeah that was me, I looked for you at pines...
Alain, thanks for the input, I've got a bit of time in the 87 shell now, so I think I'll keep going with it, but... there's always.... and finding body parts to replace will be hard, they don't even make the old style fenders anymore, I had to modify 2nd generation panels to fit, bit of steel, lot of filler, ha ha looks good from afar, far from good!
did you do any purposeful bending (othere then 'hey hit that bank!') to the front end to aligne, or adjustable tower mounts?
I have the head and intake, ecu etc. from that 93,...
Oh and a few EA81/82 carbs and parts lying around as well, but can't use those if I rally...

D did you do any purposeful bending (othere then 'hey hit that bank!') to the front end to aligne, or adjustable tower mounts? Oh and a few EA81/82 carbs and parts lying around as well, but can't use those if I rally... nop...its not nessesary on the justy...a good alignement is ok. I mite suggest to plate and reenforce your front and rear tables....they get all twisted and bent after a couples of rally...One big rock can do alot of damage...solidified the monting of thse table s on the frame to... for the older carbs...you know...no body will know....scruteniring is mostly for the securety aspect of the car... to get cut whit illegal mod...you need to have somebody really pist off at you or a very stupid dude....i think that to protest you need to put 500$ on the tabel and tell the official exacly what you think is the illegal modification...if your wrong...you loose your 500$. and if you win...you wont have to many friend after that one...and risk to get your ass kick...so ?

you have got to be kidding me.
Check to see if these are certified...
If so..i'll be down there as soon as i get some cash together.
My guess is they are the cheaper 2 inch Sparco non-FIA approved belts
I do know that the only FIA approved belts are Camlocks.
You can buy cheaper "american" harnesses with the latch/link style clasps for alot cheaper. Normally about 150cdn.
Is this a short time special?? or a constant price??

thats how it is....even for sprint rally in quebec you now need some camlock. we got cut by suprise whit that rule change...we both some latch for the Pine's...and they change the rule for the next year...so we ad to change them...even if they only ad one event...should of got the camlock in first place...shoudl of carefully read the rules book....
