i have this leak, ive cleaned the engine up a bit to try find where the oil is coming from, but its still dripping when its stopped and i cant see where its coming from!! agggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it drops about a hand sized patch over an evening, and its got to the point where its either kill it or fix it (theres probably an army of bikers out there looking to hunt me down due to accidents ) i thought it was an oil pipe from the pump that had gone (all squishy). but now it doesnt seem to be the problem (i was hoping it was that for the cheap fix!) there is a fair amount of oil where i couldnt get my hands to clean, and its down by the cam cover, would i be right to guess its that oil seal on the cam or crank? has anyone else had this as the culprit area? im pretty sure it isnt the head gasket as it still runs good with the regular oil level check. if so, how easy is it to sort with the engine still in the box? would it be better/cheaper if i just go get a second hand lump from the scrappie and fix that up to drop in place? im thinking of the most cost effective way as i am about to move house - there goes the tune up! thanks in advance Dan

If you are certain that the oil leak is on the front of the engine then I will not talk about the crappy oil seal on the distributor shaft.
If the evidence of oil shows at the top of the engine then the following does not apply:
I do know that the 2.2L boxer engines front main oil seal leaks. I always replace the oil seal when the timing belt is replaced. I don't know if the 1.3L engines have the same problem. Something to check.
Sorry if I'm not helpful in your specific problem, I am just noting some of the common oil leaks that I have experienced with Subarus.

Take off the cam cover and have a look. I have had the cam seal go before and it was fairly simple to replace, but with the oil patch size you are talking about, it probably won't be that, as the cam seal leaks pretty much just when the engine is running. One thing I would try, park the car overnight, then TEXT, move it enough so that the oil drip would be in a different spot. Wait long enough to see if it is still dripping. If it continues dripping when the car hasn't been run, then it's got to be coming from somewhere where oil sits, other than your drain plug, not sure where that would be. Other seals on that side that I can think of would be front main seal on the crank and I would guess the oil pump. Or oil pan gasket maybe.

thanks guys , i will check it out when its not raining here! i dont think it is the sump gasket because the oil seems to travel up the engine a bit, so im guessing from what ive read here and what ive looked at on the engine it is either the oil pump or crank seal. could be worse i suppose?!! its definately not the sump plug, that thing i cannot get undone for the life of me - i wish people wouldnt use those air powered sockets to do them up, while i was yanking on my rachet the car slid on the jack stand! that could have hurt my head a little! anyway, thanks again
