I'm preparing to rebuild an engine. What have you guys done about the cylinders, pistons, and rings? I haven't found an aftermarket supplier for the pistons and ring sets, only genuine Subaru parts that are WAY too expensive.

OK.... Do any of you know of a complete rebuild kit for the engine?
How have you rebuilt your engine in the past? Meaning, where did you get the parts, what parts did you chose to reuse, etc...

I am using pistons from a wrecked Justy at only 40.000Km, new piston rings, new bearings, new gasket set, new oil pump and new bolts. I rev my motor quite high, so I replace before things fail. You can use piston rings from a Toyota Corolla, and gaskets from a Geo Metro. You only need to machine the compression ring groove a bit to fit the slightly thicker top ring from Corolla. Just be sure you do not pass on the oil pump, as its design is flawed, and is one of the biggest reasons this motor fails. Look at the junkyard, and try to find a low mileage crashed Justy. That would solve most of your problems.

when I need a new engine I find it cheaper to buy a parts car.

What makes it cheaper to buy a parts car? You still have to replace all the bearings, gaskets, rings, chain/guide, plus machine shop expenses if you're going to rebuild the engine.

cause I paid $50 for the last 3 justys, it's just easier to swap in another engine when one dies

can anyone help me with a list of things to get/do when i strip and rebuild my first ever engine? i think the best help would be with a list of tools i need to get the thing in/out and apart as i have never had the chance to do this before and dont know how (other than theory & look and work out myself). i know to get new oil pump, gaskets and bolts, is there anything else? has anyone lightened their flywheel for road use, and how does it fair up compared to standard? bigger valves? lumpy cam shafts? skimmed head - is it worth doing? im not planning on turboing so compression isnt a thing i want to lower - i want to restore it so its mint and original and will still look lovely in 10 years or so - obviously a few minor tweaks here & there i have been offered a new efi motor with 26k miles run up on it, and rather than just drop it in, i want no more engine issues in the future so feel it is essential to rebuild it (and i want to learn & tinker of course! ) lastly, what would YOU do if you were to do something to this engine?! bear in mind i am on a tight budget and dont have much money to burn!!!

lastly, what would YOU do if you were to do something to this engine?! bear in mind i am on a tight budget and dont have much money to burn!!! Modify the oil pump like I've written in the other thread. I have a Justy with this mod which is running Highway on a daily basis and ran about 8000km till now. So the modification can't all be bad... Greetings, Klaus
