Anybody know if the tranny dipstick is threaded into the port? It was definitely seized, now I can turn with vise grips. I thought it should pull out like the engine oil dipstick, but it won't.

Mine is threaded. When adding fluid is it cool to add at the dipstick, or is there a filler hole under the car?

Fill from the dipstick hole. I use a long tube attached to a small plastic bottle of gear oil, just squeeze the bottle to force the oil down the tube.

Remember when you check the level, dont screw the dipstick back in.. Rest the bottom of the threaded yellow part on the flat surface of the transmission case and dangle the dipstick part in the transmission. If you dont do it right, you can severely underfill your transmission and end up with a lot of problems, like mine! -Terry

My 88' DL was threaded, however my 91' GL is not - just pulls out!
ANyone know what bubbles in the fluid indicate?? I checked it the other day and noticed this. It was the first time I've every seen bubbles in a trans-case and since then, I haven't seen bubbles build up again.

Bubbles are normal after driving. I think you're supposed to let it sit a certain number of minutes before checking the level, much like engine oil.
If the fluid settles out and still has "bubbles" in it, they may actually be tiny drops of water, which isn't good. Check that the dipstick is properly sealing it's hole, and check that the tranny breather tube isn't run in such a way that it is taking in water.
On another note, my tranny dipstick normally pulls right out, but lately has been getting stuck. As in I'm afraid I'll break the plastic ring if I pull any harder. Any ideas?

So I finally got the thing out. Not sure why it was stuck, but the fit between the lower plastic part of the "handle" and the transmission case was awfully tight. I used some sandpaper and thinned it down a bit. Perhaps years of oil caused the plastic to swell?
Took a lot of fussing and prying with stacked wrenches to get it out...be careful.

Myn is completely broken. Anyone have any idea on how to get it out. I would prefer not to drill it.
