I had a parts car once that the roll pin had worked it's way loose on the stub shaft (passenger side) which locked it in place and stripped out the stub shaft on the transmission side. Maybe something similar to that has happened?

i am about to go out and jack it up to check these suggestions out. but before i do i have a question. assuming that this pin is missing and the weight of the car is all that's holding things together. will jacking it up take the tension off and make things come apart? if so i don't want to do this until i am parked at a place i can have things apart because my apartment complex doesn't allow auto work in the parking lot

no, if the pin is out... it is really hard to get the axle off the shaft, even jacked right up. so you will be fine, unless you go really tugging on it (trying to get the joint of the stub axle) which you don't need to do.

well, jacked up both sides. both spin freely all the way into the tranny. driver side has a little more resistance but regardless, i'd say that is a very bad sign. i tried in first and second and it made no difference. just a nice click click click sound as the tire spun.

i just realized I've misguided you a bit...
as both sides would turn, as the broke section would turn the opposite direction with it in gear.
it is possible its a stub, and it was turning inside the joint.
but at the very least it looks like you are pulling a transmission to repair, which is really a motor out job.
so sorry to hear.
the job is not brutal, but is sure isn't doable in you apartment parking lot! dang rules..

i can tow it to a friends house but i don't have anything to pull the motor or tranny out other than brute strength

it's a bit of a bear, but it will come out the bottom, leaving the motor in... but you really need a decent trolly jack or transmission jack. Engine hoists are fairly cheap, and a peruse of craigs may find one, that you can sell after. But all this stuff takes time... if you need a car now.
the tools needed beyond that are not more then standard kit, wrenches and sockets. The fact it's 2wd reduces a bit of complexity too.
Your in the right part of the continent to find a spare transmission. I wouldn't bother trying to swap stub axles if that's whats done, it means cracking open the case. Just a whole new used "transaxle" and go.
If you want support, I'm sure the crew here can talk you through it.

yea i'll just have to find time to do all that and hopefully my buddy won't mind a dissasembled car in his driveway for a while. because it sounds like more than a 1 day job. expecially when i have zero experience with any in-depth auto work. thanks for all the help everyone, very appreciated. i'm considering just taking it in somewhere once i get my tax return and saving myself the trouble. we'll see about that though

You also might just consider taking the transmission out yourself, then taking just it to a shop, to save a bit of labor cost...

i'm still on the fence about using my tax return to get it going again or just getting rid of it. i was able to get a decent honda from a buddy for $500 so i'm driving that now while the black pearl sits parked in the parking lot

Jaredev, There is "that guy" that seems to come and go. Seems to be a home based wreck yard of some nature. Here's his thread subarujusty.proboards.com/thread/4267/subaru-justy-partsAlso just try posting in the wanted section, and maybe even here (anything and everything) for a transmission. I'd send you one... but the shipping would be killer! You are in the Justy homeland... where salt has not killed them all. You'll find one easy enough, even try local wreck yards and pick'n'pulls.

So originally I posted my reply in the wrong topic (mobile pages sometimes go screwy). I'm the new owner of "jaredv"'s Justy. Anyway. I believe its the differential cage gears, as both wheels spin. Easy test. Raise the whole front of the vehicle and put the trans in gear with engine off. Turn one wheel. With an open differential, if you turn one wheel, the other should turn backwards. If not, try the other wheel. If both wheels slip, it's the internal differential gears, and not the hubs. These cars are also notorious for weak differentials. I am located in Baker City, OR, and there doesn't seem to be any of these around. I'm checking around to see if I can at least just get the internal diff gears, or the whole diff. The rest of the transaxle feels good, just the diff. I'm pretty sure that the rest of the diff is ok, as well. If I can't find parts, I'm thinking I would just lock it positive inside, or maybe one wheel drive like the old VW Jettas. And as an answer to madmatt's questions to jaredv. When you let the clutch out hard (like dumping) in neutral, it makes the sound very beifly and quits. In gear, with the clutch fully out (at engine idle) it just keeps making the sound and not so much as any attempt to move the vehicle. Not a shudder, nothing. I can still roll the vehicle forward by hand if it's in reverse... In addition, I checked the dipstick, and there are some shavings on it, very tiny, but a couple. When I tear in to it, I'm going to flush the fluid and replace, to avoid later damage to the gears. Also if the engine speed DOES change, it's less then 50 rpm, because I'm really good at detecting that by hear.

Ok, so for all you guys who want to know about jaredv's justy, I have good news. I just found a scrapyard in Nampa, ID that has an 89 justy I can pull a transmission from for $200. The guy couldn't tell me if it was a 2- or 4wd, but I'm sure the front differential inner pinions are the same. All hail the Trusty Justy!

If that doesn't work out I have an extra 4WD MT. I believe it's an '89. I have been busy with other things so I haven't been on here much, but I will hopefully be as far east as Prineville in the not too distant future in one of my vehicles that will carry a transmission. However, it could be as much as a month from now. Same price $200.

Any chance I could talk you into coming a little closer to where I'm at?

Any chance I could talk you into coming a little closer to where I'm at? Not likely, I am going to be relocating to the area, so I will be there for work and house hunting. Consequently, my schedule on this trip might not be up to me, per se. I might try to make a quick visit to the South Fork Limb Cast area, which is more your direction, but it's way more remote. I have never shipped a transmission, but I am willing to look into it. I am just really busy right now. Seems like it wouldn't take too much since it's a pretty direct route down I-84.

But things ship by weight, so it may be expensive. I can't afford to pay any extra for shipping, as $200 is already too much. I'm just willing to pay it for this car, despite the extremely large sacrifice I have to make the spare that much.

Some bus services and other freight haulers will move large heavy items for not too much if you secure it on a pallet, shrink wrap it, and deliver it to their dock. That's why I mentioned I-84. But I understand, the purchase price of a 26 year old used Justy is not the actual price. Let me know if you decide you want it, thanks.
