OMG!!!!
Terry! Why did I never notice the difference in the 1st gen gear ratios!
That would actually make a HUGE improvement. Because really the 2-3 shift is never bad, almost good, it's going to 4th that bogs. If the pinion pulls off the end, this would work! I just need a 1st gen 2wd gearset!
Man you made my night!

I have adjusted the valve since assembly and it was hot when I did them.

A Justy engine pretty much always sounds like a Singer sewing machine.... .... Due to the oil pump/ water pump drive chain. it adds character, carry on.

That was the answer I hoped for. Now for that exhaust leak noise I have found what it is. That is my old head which was handier than the installed. Were looking at the intake side cyl 3 what is that port towards the bottom of the head? The one installed on my car has exhaust gas coming from it, though on my old one the one i took a picture of it looks as though that isnt even possible. Am I discovering another problem or do I just need to plug it and ride?

It is an egr passage. If your car had egr your intake manifold would cover that hole, so you need to plug it.
It may be easier to plug it on the exhaust side.

Cool that is what I thought it maybe, I don't have any of that stuff. I ended up taping the hole I think it was a 3/8 npt tap and using a matching plug I had with some sealer on it to be sure, cleared my problem right up. I had a little stumble every once in a while when cold that seems to have been fixed with the plug also.
I drove my justy home for the first time in what has to have been at least 6 months. It runs great nice and smooth good oil pressure though I would like to see it higher but its on par for the course. its about 35-40 cold at idle and after running for about two hours its at 8-10 at idle it picks right up with rpm hot or cold this is with the factory suggested 10w-40 oil conventional of course. Its funny to think I have owned it for about 7-8 months and have still only driven it a handful of times.
I cant remember what it shifted like when the clutch was good, which was pretty much just my test drive before I purchased it the clutch failed on my way home on the highway, But it seems to be shifting better now. Like a hot knife through butter even on down shifts. What are you guys using for tranny fluid? I ended up using the 75w-90 redline ns that I had handy at the shop hard to say with only one long test drive but it seems to be working great.
Well I have to say after all of this, Thank you everybody for the input and help where you could help. This has been a fun "adventure" now I can have even better adventures in my justy. Thanks to everyone that had input or words of encouragement.

hey! good to hear it's working!
yeah that was the exhaust port i mentioned as it's a later head. but I ran a late head with early manifold for a while with no problems, just plugged.
great to hear its working!

I completely forgot between the time I received it and the time I put everything together. It is working great, thanks again! I've been driving it since I got it running and the egr port plugged. Love it, I forgot how much fun this little growling three banger is! I can worry about the other small issues now that the big one is no longer a problem. My next thing is to either replace or fix the slop in the right side of the steering rack. The rattling noise sounds bad and is pretty annoying.

The inner tie rod ends are common to go, but available cheap! Can be a bit of a bear to change. Best done with the rack out, but probably doable with it in as well. Just hard to access.

You wouldn't happen to have a list of the bearings and seals you replaced in the transmission would you?
I'm going to need to rebuild mine since it's full of ground up aluminum. It'd save me a lot of time to have something to start with.
Thanks, -Dave
