I've had a few Justy's with A/C and they all had leaky condensors due to corrosion. The Sanden compressors on the Justy's are quite reliable. I usually just swap in a good condensor and charge the system with inexpensive hydrocarbon refrigerant and all is well.

There's a lot of issues with retrofitting to R134a. You have to change the dryer the o-rings and the oil to make it work for any length of time. It's far easier to just drop in a hydocarbon refrigerant with no modifications needed. This is what I've used for years with great results autorefrigerants.com/co00033.htm

Hydrocarbon based refrigerants do work well.. They are less prone to leakage than R-12 and R-134a refrigerants due to their molecular structure and last but not least...As far as keeping you cool in the summer..They put out like a meat locker! BUT..They are extremely flammable and illegal in several states for use in Mobile A/C systems. Both ASE and MACS discourage their use and recommend that all 1994 and older R-12 systems be retrofitted to use a R-134a refrigerant. See link.. www.sae.org/news/releases/05hydrocarbon_warning.htmSure, Its is a pain in the butt to retrofit a car correctly. There is an up front expense for the kit and the reality is leaks DO occur over time (This holds true of all A/C systems regardless of refrigerant type) but, hell Suva (R-134a) sells for 5-10 dollars a pound. So, if you need to add a pound or so per year to your Justy you won't go broke doing it. Just my 2 cents Good luck with your Justy..89 Jim

Thanks Jim; All... I'm planning on jumping in to the A/C issue next week... Was wondering... if you press the A/C button should there be a telltale sound of some sort? Cheers,

The A/C in my Justy works great, my suggestion to fellow working A/C owners is to make sure that you keep your air vent open in the car to keep the A/C from wearing out. It is okay to leave the vent closed while the A/C is starting up, if the heat is so unbareable you really can't wait a few minutes, but leaving the vent closed abuses your A/C.

Wowsers!! Its already a year later! Last Summer went so fast that I never had a chance to play with the AC system! As I was doing the drum brakes today (very needed!) while sweating my asterisk off, I got to figuring 'Tis the season' again. I was still wondering though... if you press the A/C button should there be a telltale sound of some sort? Thanks again,

hey 89 I see that you must be far enough east to be in the heat belt not the rain and flooding belt!Anyway from what I have seen and know about A.C. systems, they won't engage (the pump won't turn) unless there is enough coolant in the system.

I HAVE CONVERTED SEVERAL AC SYSTEMS FROM R12 TO134A. IF YOUR SYSTEM WAS WORKING FINE BUT YOU JUST LOST FREON IT SHOULED BE NO PROBLEM TO CONVERT.THE OLD O-RINGS ARE PROBABLY OK IF YOU HAVE A AIR COMPRESSOR AND 134 GUAGES IT WILL BE EASY.MOST PEOPLE DO NOT PULL A VACUME ON THE SYSTEM THIS IS A MUST.YOU WILL NOT COOL PROPERLY.IF YOU DONT HAVE A VACUME PUMP HOURBER FREIGHT TOOL COMPANY HAS A AIR OPERATED PUMP FOR LESS THAN $15.00 IT LOOKS JUST LIKE THE ONE CARRIED BY MAC TOOLS.USE THIS AND PULL A VACUME AND SHUT THE VALVE OFF AND LET IT SIT FOR 15 TO 30 MIN.IF YOUR GAUGE DOES NOT LOOSE ANY VACUME YOUR LEAK WAS PROBABLY IN YOUR SHRADER VALVES IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO REPLACE THOSE ANYWAY NAPA HAS THEM INDIVIDUALLY FOR ABOUT $1.00 EACH YOU CAN BUY THE RETRO FIT KIT FOR ABOUT $40.00 IT SHOULD HAVE EVERTHING YOU NEED AND YOUR SYSTEM WILL CHARGE AT ABOUT 85% OF THE R12 OZ. DEPENDING ON OUTSIDE TEMP YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE LOW SIDE GAUGE TO BE AROUND 20 TO 30 BUT CLOSER TO 20 THATS THE BASICS THAT WILL GET YOU GOING. ON SOME SYSTEMS YOU HAVE TO USE A PAPERCLIP IN THE CONNECTER ON THE LOW PRESSURE SWITCH TO MAKE THE COMPUTER THINK THET THERE IS ENOUGH FREON TO OPPERATE

So I own a 93 GL with A/C.
It didnt work when I bought it, the compressor wouldnt even click when I pressed the A/C button.
Summer is here again, so I went out yesterday and tested it to see how much was in the lines. I pressed one of the valve down and it hissed for about a second or two and stopped.
So thats a good sign!
I am hoping that all it needs is a refill.
So as soon as I get paid I am going to be changing the fittings over to work with R134a and then refilling it with Oil and R134a.
I'll let you all know how it goes!

my AC doesn't work. I know I need to get a dryer and be compressor and those are easy to find. However I don't want to put a new compressor on without replacing the condenser.. Can SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO!?!? If it's an after market condenser unit then that's fine. I just need to know what one to get. Please help me..

I think on these old r12 systems the condenser is flushable, hence no need to replace.
Are you certain your compressor is shot?

Well I got my 91 Subaru going and it is hot as heck here in CA. So need to figure how to get the AC going??? short the pressure switch to see if the compressor kicks on, in which case you can try to simply recharge the system with those butane AC recharge kits.
