Hey guys, just thought I'd say hi. I know a few of you (mainly Alain/24 Rally) and met the rally guys in Quebec last year when I was doing the TV coverage (yellow and blue car). Now, I'm happy to say that I'm also working on my own Justy rally project! I bought 2.5 cars in November and scrapped two shells after stripping them for parts. I kept a clean 2-door 1991 AWD that I've been working on. When I first got them back to the house, it was a bit of a mess as I had two full cars and enough parts to build three! Right now I'm just stripping down the car to the shell in preparation for the cage. The engine runs strong, but it needs a new clutch, headgasket, and probably good "once over" to make it bombproof again. I'm so glad I found this forum...I'm going to have LOTS of questions Warwick www.formulaphoto.comwww.flatovercrest.com

Yeah, its a tape deck! By the way it was attached, I think it was an option from the factory.

Warrick,
What is truly sad is that if you held up any of those parts, I could tell you what it is.
Maybe you can ask John Vanlaningham if he is interested in rebuilding your struts with some VW inserts. If you need the corner weights just let me know.
I have also noticed that the red one is a Fun Justy! If you could keep the stickers on, that would be cool!
Welcome aboard!

Haha...I was just trying to figure out how to take those aweful stickers off Was the "fun justy" a special edition or something? Yeah, any suspension info you can give me would be great. I'll be doing the bilstein insert solution I think (like John V does). Cheers, Warwick

The Fun Justy is the only special edition ever issued. It ranks right up there with a Levi's Gremlin. ;D To each his own, I guess. Just take a couple of pictures before you take them off. We'll call it record keeping. I have always wanted to bug JVL on the topic of struts, I think he does a lot with the VW Bilsteins cause he knows them in and out and they are, compared to DMS's, relativley cheap. He'll give you crap, but take it in stride. I am just sad that everybody's part cars look better than my driver. Matthew

Yeah, I've been to JVL's house when my friend was picking up a Saab...he was trying to sell me Cosworth engine parts for my Ford Focus the whole time hehe. He'll be a good resource.

If you guys have any ideas for a suspension I'd be glad to know it as well - I'm really in a need to replace the stock stuff... So, what are the possebilities?

Really the only solution (other than a very involved custom setup) is to fabricate some sleeves using the OEM attachment points, and putting Bilstein inserts in them. From a few rally folks, I've learned that you need to reinforce the top mounts too.

Warwick, Sticker Removal...? A heat gun at 'medium' ought to bubble them enough for removal. Those 'Fun Justy' contrast bumpers are fantastic - so Subaru Outback looking! Parts vs. funding... you've got PM mail. Cheers,

Warwick, Quick question... noticed you had your door panels off... Are you able to see through the film to tell if the exterior door moulding is on with adhesive or clip/fasteners?? Thanks alot,

89: I can't tell how the molding is attached - the big safety door bar inside the doorshell covers up the backside. After a few months of little progress (too busy) I finally got some work done on the 'ol girl. The sound deadening material is all chipped off, and I'm wire-brushing the remaining bits off, then spraying the floor to prevent rust. The gloss white sections have me excited to get it all done! Going to put some seats in after I get back from Targa and drive it around a bit to sort out the engine (needs clutch and head gasket) and then it'll go back into the shop for a cage before the winter rallies. Mmmm...metal/rubber dust. Aluminum tape to seal up the chassis Sweet!

Holy Mackerel Yowsers!!! Nice going... I played that game with the old '73 Bimmer. Glad to see you're rocking the respirator... I used to get a nasty little headache from those adhesive/paint/wirebrush fumes... sheesh. Try that 'Oops Multi-purpose remover' stuff to dissolve any stubborn/crevice adhesive - its on my Top 10 favorite chemicals list. Did you read Fraser9864's 'stripped out - updated' post? Says his JUSTY 'van edition' simply had the carpet affixed with some velcro... not a bit of sound deadening to be seen!?! Thanks for the follow-up on the moulding - I think I figured out a way to affic numbers without flushing out that area - in a much more amusing way! Kanpai,

89, sorry, ive obviosly got the wrong end of the stick. i did have sound deadening under the carpets but the carpet was only held in with velcro. to start with i simply painted over the sound deadening, but as of this last weekend it is no more. i will update my thread as soon as i have pictures. i have to just get the last bit of adheisive off and another coat of paint. paint thinners is about the best for removing it.makes you a bit lightheaded after a bit though!! btw, nice going fp, let us know how you get on with the suspension, ithink everyone on here wants to do something similar. i am looking at possibly AVO universal coilovers, going to take the justy down to demon tweaks for them to measure up and give us a price. i think the link is www.demon-tweaks.com/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=AVUAPA090/070

I noticed you guys talking suspension upgrades. I 've got an '87 that needs struts. I'd like to upgrade to something other than OEM. I have been running auto-X and plan on running hill climbs (solo I) next season after I put in the new beefed-up motor. Any help would be appreciated.
