I am very happy with this car, which was bought by my father in law (who was crazy on Justys) he bought it 3 years ago from a subaru showroom for 7500 Euros. But he kept this car for Sunday rides and used his old justy 10 instead. Unfortunately he got really sick after 4 months and he was hospitalized until he died. So the family placed the car for sale and got an offer of 2500 Euros - so since I was a relative I was given a preference and bought the car myself.
Some people are telling me that the 4WD consumes alot of fuel even if not engaged - can someone enlighten me about this? Another guy told me that I can totally disengage the 4WD by removing the 4WD drive shaft (ie the shaft going from front to the back wheels - differential) in order to reduce the drag of the shafts on the engine performance thus increasing fuel economy. Kindly note that I have no use of the 4WF. I am presently testing the car to check for fuel economy.
Any advice as regards fuel economy by removing the 4WD.

I would like to see some pictures! Fuel economy per 100km of old(87/88) 1.0 and 1.2 carburated engines: FWD 1.0 in city 6.9l at 90km/h 5.2l at 120km/h 7.0l 4WD 1.0 in city 7.2l at 90km/h 5.4l at 120km/h 7.2l FWD 1.2 in city 7.3l at 90km/h 4.9l at 120km/h 6.8l 4WD 1.2 in city 8.0l at 90km/h 5.7l at 120km/h 7.5l From some Holland spec list. It is not that bad... And I'm sure MPFI eats less...

Thanks for providing me with the data - as I told you, I am driving this car for the first week - so will provide you with what I am doing in the coming days and also send you some pictures. What is MPFI?

Hi, congrats on your new Justy and sorry for your loss. I hope you aren't going change anything and keep the car in mint condition. It would be great to see some pictures to see how it looks now .

Hi, sorry for not sending any pictures, but we just had a sand storm and some rain so you can imagine how messy the car looks, will be sending pictures once I clean the car. I have now done about 500 km and the fuel consumption is about 200km with 15 litres (mind you I drive with an average of 60km/hr and try to keep on top gear as much as possible. What I notice is that the car does not move as fast (when compared to other FWD cars) when going down hill in free gear - this I attribute to the 4WD gear transmission (though driving in FWD) - What do you think? The radio unfortunately is only MW band and therfore I was thinking of replacing with a another one with FM as well. Even the speakers - the car has only one speaker at the side of the steering wheel so I am thinking of upgrading. Any suggestions?

By the way the car is not fuel injection but carburetor.

I ran into someone who is a mega Subie nut, driving a Justy as well. Long story short he converted his 4x4 into 4x2, but had to swap out the transmission. He mentioned even if you pull all the 4x4 parts up to the transmission, and manage to cap everything off, the 4x4 transmission itself brings mileage down just by itself. I'd trust his word given he designs custom turbo/supercharged 600+ hp WRX drift cars.
But, when I got ahold of my '90 4x4 ECVT, it was getting 32 mpg. It's now at 38 mpg and shooting for 39-40 mpg. After this is would be very hard to get more out of the platform.
Mods:
- Tires to 38 PSI checked every week - K&N filter matched to drilled holes in the exhaust, took a couple of months to find best matched combination of low end torque and gas mileage - Don't drive over 45 mph - Timing belt change - Cap/rotor change - Plug wires and plugs NGK OEM ONLY - Remove rear seats, passenger seat, all related seat belt equipment aside from drivers (those are heavy). Removed all weight of unnecessary parts. - Red Line full synthetic ECVT fluid - 10-30 oil to half dipstick level - No spare tire or jack or any other tools (commute to work 10 miles, all surface streets) - Removed mudflaps - No water in the washer reservoir - Removed windshield wipers and store in back seat - No A/C on even though it's equipped - No fans or radio on unless necessary, to minimize drain from alternator
As you can observe I'm going to some extreme levels, and getting the 38-39 mpg range...

Saturn cars get 40mpg with all the seats and also 4cylinder. The justy gets the mpg advertised.

I see where you're coming from, I'm just making it an experiment just messing around... here's the logic..
1. It's an ECVT and had 100,000 miles when I bought it, it can blow up anytime now 2. If it was manual, I'd be tearing through whatever I could and have fun 3. I had all the seats, and over time no one wanted to ride along in it, so the seats got pulled 4. After pulling seats, I can put 2 bales of hay and 4 bags of chicken feed just fine when I have to after work 5. If I need more hay or feed, I use the 5.2L Dakota truck parked on the side of the house 99.7% of the time, which gets 230 hp and 12-14mpg 6. I thought, what's the most you could get out of this thing? And trying to find out.
If you exclude any Hybrid vehicles (which you'll pay at least $15k for), this Justy beats every Mini, Smart Car, Fiat, and the Honda Fit. Only the Toyota Yaris comes close.
Yes, Saturn, Honda Civics, Geo Metro beats it, but just having fun...
If it was a manual it would be totally different story, it's only the ECVT which makes me turn it into a granny high mpg car.

Dear All
Kindly advise how to send attachments as I am trying to send some pictures but it says forum has exceeded its storage space.! what can I do to send a couple of photos.
Another issue that i need your help is that it seems that the bushes of the gear lever have by time deteriorated and there is quite some excessive play in the gear shifter - can you inform from where it would be best to buy spares on line. NB I do not have a manual to check the part no - would also like to find one (if not on line) to buy one.

On the CVT's, they will live a long life as long as:
Brushes are changed about every 60,000 miles Never ever EVER change directions until the car is fully stopped Never use the transmission to hold the car on hills Understand when to use Ds

What find of transmission And no its not worth removing the driveshaft as you wont gain anything. You still have rear half shafts and a rear diff that makes all the drag. For a 3mpg gain its not worth it.

It's official. Here are the mods, 1990 4x4 ECVT...
Mods:
- Tires to 39 PSI checked every week - K&N filter matched to drilled holes in the exhaust, took a couple of months to find best matched combination of low end torque and gas mileage - Don't drive over 45 mph - Timing belt change - Cap/rotor change - Plug wires and plugs NGK OEM ONLY - Remove rear seats, passenger seat, all related seat belt equipment aside from drivers (those are heavy). Removed all weight of unnecessary parts. - Red Line full synthetic ECVT fluid - 10-30 oil to half dipstick level - No spare tire or jack or any other tools (commute to work 10 miles, all surface streets) - Removed mudflaps - No water in the washer reservoir - Removed windshield wipers and store in back seat - No A/C on even though it's equipped - No fans or radio on unless necessary, to minimize drain from alternator - Pulled fuses on everything but criticals, reduce parasitic drain on battery - 4" Sheet front metal air dam ($15 roof trim from Lowe's)
.....42.9 MPG.....
And main contributors:
1. Synthetic ECVT and 10-30 oil to half dipstick: 2mpg 2. Excess weight removal: 2mpg 2. Tires to 39 psi, K&N filter, balanced intake/exhaust: 3mpg 3. Front air dam: 3mpg 4. All other mods: 1mpg
Going to block lower radiator vent on bumper for next tank, see if it goes up. The air dam forced more air through vent and the temp gauge was low, not sure if good for coolant loop/thermostat/water pump.

Great accomplishment, can you post pics through a web host of the air dam and the synthetic oil products, plus what your gutted interior looks like?

Hi guys - I have bought a new stereo and a couple of 4 x 6 speakers for the front - a friend gave me two other speakers 6 x 9, he told me I can fix at the rear on the boot shelf at the back = can I ask what is your opinion for this and is the car is already equipped with speaker connection at the rear or do I need to pass the whole wiring from the stereo to the rear.?

Try to not waste the hat holder or something, nobody likes it... you can easy pull wires under the covers on sides of flor, there is no wires for rear speakers I think plus if you have radio with it's own rear L/R speakers output you can use that benefit.
