sample size of 1 means dick in engineering or any other data collection effort. i presume you are not an engineer if you dont readily know that.

back to corrosion in cooling systems .... I've had a severe corrosion problem in my cooling system for years and nothing if tried has fixed the problem. Flushed many times with water, different types of cooling system flush from the parts store, even tried several brands of coolant. After a week of driving the coolant would be as rusty as before. I had no heat the last winter i drove it. changed thermostats, no heat (also replaced the missing foam on some of the shutter/damper doors with felt).. My Overflow Tank Water Pump Cover Radiator (very heavy for being drained)

this is from using a coolant with phosphates. you need one like (i think they use this) GM Dexcool or anything thats "low phosphate" and use distilled water. not tap water.
to "clean" the system you CAN use the cleaner/flush thats a sand/powder. however with an old car like this it might expose a leak that was being held shut by the rust and scale.

I once had an 86 87 corolla with a problem like this. I ended up disconnecting the hoses to the radiator and heater core. I used lots of water from my water hose at full blast and flushed the heater core radiator and engine backwards as best as I could, the job gets messy may want to cover the distributor. then I reconnected everything and used some sort of chemical flush. I followed the flush directions when after I removed the flush I ran water throw each component again back and forwards. I did that one more time with the chemical flush and afterwards used a 50/50 mix coolant. The coolant was still green 8 mo later when I sold it.
