All these grooves are doing is raising the displacment right? I mean in essense All your doing is making the combution chamber slightly bigger, so iam not sure what all this contraversy is about, more displacment = more power. making a 1200cc into maybe a 1230-1250 cc, maybe. So yeah its gunna be a little more but not alot, and chances are you are not raising the displacment evenenly across the the 3 cyl ,you kinda just cuting by eye so now you have more displacment but less balance so you are basicaly canceling them out. This would make sense since half the people who do this say there is little to no difference. seems like calling it "Singh Grooves" is giving a fancy name to a fairly common practice among anyone who has ever built a engine , they call it " boring over" , its been being done for about 80 years now. You raise the displacmentby increasing the diameter (or circumference however you wana look at it) of each cylinder. Faber, I love ya buddy but I'm afraid you're dead wrong on this one, unfortunately. "Displacement" as we know it is the total swept volume of the cylinder when the piston is at BDC (bottom dead center). You got a can of Pringles, it holds this many chips. You bought the "30% more" can and you got 30% more chips. That's because the tube that the chip are in is longer. That's your stroke. As long as the diameter of the tube is the same and the length of the tube is the same, you get the same ammount of potato chips. Cutting holes in the lid of the can will only make your chips stale! What these grooves effectively do is to lower the compression ratio by holding the lid a wee bit higher off the top of the Pringles can. It doesn't make the engine any bigger. As long as the bore is 78mm and the stroke is 83mm the total displacement for 3 cylinders will remain 1190cc no matter what you do to the head. Everyone can play with these formulas. For imperial measurements: 0.7854(# of cylinders)(bore X bore)(stroke)= C.I.D. cubic inch displacementFor metric measurements 0.0007854(# of cylinders)(bore X bore)(stroke)= cc's cubic centimeters You can also switch back & forth by multiplying or dividing my by 16.387 respectively.

Another note on Singh grooves.. From my understanding they are meant to change the characteristics of the burn inside the cylinder. The idea being if you cut grooves from the point of ignition, the spark plug, to the outside of the combustion chamber it will not only create a turbulent burn but will force the burn to the outside of the cylinder. It's all hypothetical but it does make sense. People ramble on about how "good" it is to "fully atomize" the "air/fuel mixture", and really it's beneficial. In the end it's all in an effort to make the fuel burn fast. If fuel burns fast, and complete, the engine runs very strong. Testimonials of people using the Singh grooves say they were able to advance their timing closer to TDC and that was the huge difference. Note to mention if you burn the fuel completely, your emissions are far less and your engine will last much, much longer.

Because with initial timing already being BTDC, any further advance takes the spark further and further away from top dead center.

Yup, thats what I meant. The important part is you knew what I was talking about.

Yeah, the point of Siingh grooves is to help out the combustion proccess.
Here's another update;
I'm well into my normal 500 miles/week commuting is all - that's all I've done for about 4 months now is just drive the snot out of my Sooby on my commute. I have about 9000 miles on my rebuild now!
Engine is smooth as a baby's butt, runs like a champ. Very happy with the rebuild, siingh grooves, and everything after going through the whole car this past winter.
I consistently get 32mpg ('92 4WD, fuel injected) with Chevron gas - 30mpg with Maverick gas when the Chevron credit card system isn't working at 4:30 in the morning.
One more thing I just remembered.
I had installed an oil cooler, thermostatically controlled valve, a huge remote oil filter, and as big of an oil filter on the engine as I could fit. I have Valvoline synthetic oil in it. My hose clamps were leaking a little, and I've added a quart of oil every 3-4 tanks of gas (I just tightened the clamps a couple of weeks ago).
My oil just barely started to have some dark color to it - not bad after almost 9K miles. I think I'll change it in another 1-2 thousand miles.
What a great little car! Doug

There is something very familiar about this..
I was worried that you would be more likely to blow the head gasket with the grooves coming so far from the combustion chamber and very glad to hear that it is going well. You have done some nice things with that car and really made it your own. Your custom work is clean and tidy. Well done! Keep up the great work, Danimal

yeah...de jah vu post...
Thanks - I like my projects, even though I do plenty of complaining when I'm in the middle of them.

It has been over 2 years since I rebuilt my motor. It now has 107201 on the odometer. Engine installed at 80375. It still runs great! Idle is smooth and no pinging! Spark plugs still white! Only oil leak was from valve cover gasket. Install new one with sealer on both sides ... no more leaks! Using Mobile One High Mileage 5W30 synthetic motor oil. After break in used 10W30 Pensoil but switched to synthetic early this year. My engine seems to like it! No knocks or leaks. Using a stethoscope to check for engine noise. Nice to be able to rev engine and not hear any engine knock! Installed the original 145/80R12 from tire_easy.com. Fixed the AC after replacing the dryer and expansion valve. It is very cold now without bogging down the engine like it did with R134. On long trips I am averaging 42mpg. In town it is 38mpg. Both with AC on. Have not installed the prelube device yet. Do not know if I will. It seems to work fine without it! My car is 18 years old now and a number of items need replacement but I do not want to let this one go! It is nice to be able to fill it up for a lot less than others. Power is still there! But I drive with more sense now. My car works great! Wish others the same!

My Justy quit on me! It would not start! I was glad I was at home and it was in my carport. I pulled the coil wire to see if I had spark ... it did. My first thought was that my computer was out! I pulled the spark plugs, but they were not wet ... so I thought my injectors were not firing! It was down for three days while I was trying to find a replacement computer only to find out that my rotor had burned through. After I replaced the rotor it started right up! Glad I am not a mechanic anymore! It has been over 48,000 miles since my last tune up. It ran very smooth until it quit. I decided I would go ahead and fix a leaking camshaft seal, replace the timing belt, and do a complete tune up! The air filter was filthy! The spark plugs looked like they could go for a bit longer but thought it would better to replace. My Justy runs great again, but then it ran great before it quit! Attachments:

Here it is 6 years since I replaced the short block and rebuilt the head. I now have over 145,000 on my Justy, 64,000 on this engine. No major problems as of yet! I have run Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 full sythetic since the rebuild. Only running dino oil during the break in. My owner's manual does not recommend using 5W30 but I have manage to get away with it by : 1.) I am using it in a brand new block, and 2.) the oil I am using is a high quality synthetic. I am changing every 5000 miles with a Carquest premium oil filter. No STP! The Carquest has an oil check valve to keep the oil from draining back to the oil pan. The STP does not! I have had only two oil leaks to contend with, both on the old cylinder head! One was oil leaking from my original distributor. I replaced it with a reconditioned unit. And the other was a leak from the camshaft seal. The original camshaft had a groove in it where the seal rode. I installed a new seal further back into the seat pass the area of wear.
It has been awhile since I posted on this forum. Not only is my Justy getting older, but parts are getting harder to come by! Can't even find them in the scrap yards! It still has outstanding power and acceleration for such a small car, and real good fuel mileage. If I could only find the body parts I need. My tailgate was taken out by a Toyota 4runner that was raised so high off the ground that when they rear ended me, it didn't touch my rear bumper. It crushed the bottom part of my tailgate but did not break the back glass! I just can't open it any more!
My hood, grille, and left front fender done by a trailer hitch on another lifted vehicle! He said that he could not see me! Both insurance companies wanted to total my vehicle instead of fixing the damage done! What a rip off! I hope all is well with everyone on this forum. Try to keep those Justys running!
