Hi, Can any one tell me if there is a difference in spring rate between a Justy with a 998cc engine and a Justy with 1198cc 4WD? I heard that the one with 1198cc engine uses springs with a higher spring rate. Also can any one tell me the spring rates of these springs?
Thanks Ray

Ray,
I just pulled a set of springs from an FWD 89 Justy parts car with an 1189 cc engine. I measured the spring rates and they are as follows:
225 LB in the front 200 LB in the rear
Hope this helps.
FYI....This is a USA built Justy so, your rates may be different.

Jim... are you sure? we believe fronts to be like 118 lbs/inch and rears 180-200 or something....
our rally springs (considerably stiffer then stock) are 175 up front and 250 in the rear... the rears are way stiffer due to being set so far in on the control arm (lever priciple)
I think Doitsidewayz had stock spring rate listed some where her... but I can't find them now

Matt,
A buddy of mine who works at one of the NASCAR teams in Charlotte actually did the measurment on my springs. I do not have a spring tester (Wish I did!) but, thats the rates he told me. I will call him and see if he got it right.
I'll post more when I find out.
Jim.

I can't find my FSM right now.
But i think that the fronts were somewhere like 115 Lbs/in
and i think the rears were around 150 or so...
I can't remember exactly....
200 and 250 is WAY off

Hi guys, thanks for the input. I had found part of a 1988 Justy service manual. It states that the Coefficeint of Spring are 129lb/inch for the front and 269lb/inch for the rear. I had bought a set of springs from Supplex who said they have them for Justy with 1198cc engine + 4WD.
Where do you think I can find harder springs of the same diameter. Matt for rally do you use standard struts and the springs fit right on or you made mods.
Note that I want springs with larger spring rate as I want to lower the car and I don't want it to bottom.
Thanks in advance Ray

Ray
I used a cheap honda civic coil over kit, to get the adjustable perches, then picked up AFCOIL springs from the local roundy round place at the rate I wanted... (the Lowering springs for the civic were 400lbs and 300 lbs, way to stiff for rally, and way to stiff for the stock dampers to control. It worked quite well, just torched off the old perches on the front (left a bit to hold the new perch) and slid the new adjustable perches down... We wanted to raise the car... so I think they were 12" springs in the front and 8 or 10 inch springs in the rear.... The rear took a bit more fab work to do, I wish I had pics so I could post them... but If you check out justyracer's pic of the Swift rear springs... I did pretty much that set-up..

Thanks Matt for your help. One final question, what year was the Civic that you used the coilovers from?
Thanks Ray

Oh, I can't remember....probably recent years. I just threw out the boxes about a month ago! Take a diameter measurement of you strut, go to a parts supply and start opening boxes of what's on sale!

This spring rate is really confusing me ??
I got a email from the guy hoo prep the justy that was competing against us(back in the days...) ...and he was using 300lbs in the front...whit 20w50 oil in the oem struts...
this confirm that i did have 300lbs spring in the front of my old justy....i wasent shure cos the guy hoo sold me the car told me they were like 150 ?? but wen looking at the spring there was a big 300 on them ? hee told me it was impossible ?? so i wasent shure ?...now im am..they were 300lbs!

Maybe we need to have a chat with JVL... I've been happy with the 175's so far, my car I'm sure will be a bit lighter then yours... being the GEN 1 Tin model (he he) and I'm still running the stock dampers... I feel I would have to upgrade the dampers if I was to add spring rate... control is there now... but only just. The jumps at Pines were okay.. we did not go back up in the air, but then again I wasn't pushing real hard. I have thought about upping the rear rate... but right now the car rotates pretty good, and I really don't want any more... I'm afraid that might happen if things got stiffer back there...
This is black science to me anyway....

man..the JVL/bilstien stuff worked awesome on your RX at Pines.
The thing jumped like a champ.. just landed and kept going.
I think you guys are too stiff!!!
John shipped mine with 250 in the front and 200's in the rear....and this is for a 2500 lbs car!!!
The thing has NO body roll

Heh Chris
You think 175 is too stiff for an 1800 lb car? really that's softer then your rates...
My big concern is that with our limited travel we need to be a bit stiffer to compensate...
Body role is very minimal... and anti-role bar is removed...
I wish I could go bilstein, but budget only allows for so much.. and I'm trying to make PN...

i know 300 sound crazy ? but the otter justy that i got the reference from was built by the JM alcaraz team....and let me tell you that they know what they are doing... he did a 13e place at tall pine whit that justy.... and could of easely done top 10(or better) if he would not of stop to pull few car out of the ditch ( and thats a year that more the 13 car finished ) the car was andling VERY good everywere and was perfect on all regular jump...its only at BDC that we did a second jump after landing ? since we upgrade for better damping we will go for lower spring rate... the only way to find out is to try it out ? but for that i have to finish the damn car i hate winter!!!
